Hi I'm Brent

I grew up in Fairview, Utah, near my grandparents. I teach molecular biology at Brigham Young University. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I enjoy hiking, fishing and biking in Utah. I love to read novels, history of the United States and biographies of U.S. and LDS church leaders. I have taught molecular biology and related courses at Auburn University in Alabama and at Brigham Young University in Utah. I love to work with students in the classroom and in my research lab, and to discover new details of how the DNA and proteins in the cells of our bodies function. I am constantly amazed at the beauties and wonders of our Heavenly Father's creations. I have been happily married for 31 years to my wife, who is from Oregon. I have four children who live away from home now, the youngest of which is serving as a Mormon missionary in Guatemala. I grew up as a member of the LDS church with great examples from my parents and grandparents.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents and grandparents were members of the Mormon Church, and so I grew up as a member of the church. Some of my ancestors had joined the Mormon Church in Denmark and Scotland and came to Utah, and I am grateful for the rich heritage that I have. I had wonderful examples from my family and from teachers and leaders in my congregation. I learned many things about the Savior as I grew up, and I enjoyed reading the Book of Mormon and learning about great prophets and leaders in that book such as Captain Moroni, Nephi, Helaman, King Benjamin, and many others. Even with growing up in the church, I had to come to know for myself that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true. I have done that through reading the Book of Mormon and Bible, and through pondering, prayer, and fasting. These feelings and my testimony have been strengthened throughout my life, and I grew spiritually in many ways by serving as a missionary in Japan. I have seen how the Gospel of Jesus Christ changes the lives of people as they embrace it, and I know of the joy and peace these beliefs bring to me and to others. I have had many experiences that have reinforced my beliefs, and I cannot deny this witness to me. I hope to be able to help others gain this same joy and peace in their lives.

How I live my faith

I try to live each day by following the example of Jesus Christ-to be considerate and aware of others and their needs. While I can't do much by myself I know that when I am helping others I am doing what the Savior taught. I do my best to be a good example and to help those around me in whatever way I can. On Sunday I enjoy teaching a Sunday School class on the basic principle of the Gospel, where we review the basic beliefs of our church based on scriptures. These include faith in Jesus Christ, repentance and the power of the Atonement of Christ, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the proper authority. I enjoy sharing my own experiences with the Gospel with everyone in my class, and with the people in my neighborhood as I visit with them.
