Hi I'm Mike

I'm a physicist and web developer from Utah. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a college student studying physics and working as a web developer. I want to get a Ph.D. and become an aerospace engineer eventually. My hobbies are skateboarding, mountain biking, and working on projects that I think have the potential to change the world. My personality type is INTJ. I served a mission in Nagoya, Japan. I speak Japanese, Portuguese, and some German.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up in a family of members. I am very independent, and I would not be a member if I didn't learn for myself that it was right. Here are just a couple of reasons why LDS doctrine makes sense to me: There is a god, or there is not. If there is no god, my life has no meaning because when I die, that will be the end. Even if I make a difference in the world, everyone in the world is going to die. I hope that death isn't the end. So I choose to believe in God. I even feel like there is meaning to this life, beyond what science can tell us. We are not just animals. Making the assumption that there is a god is good for two reasons: 1. You need to assume there is a god to pray to him and ask him if he exists 2. People who choose to be religious are happier. And it is very natural to believe in science and God at the same time. Many Christians are scientists. God is the best scientist. If there is a god, he either loves us or he doesn't. I feel very strongly that he does. I have experienced so many incredibly poetic coincidences in my life that I would not dare doubt it. I have felt the love of God. Why is there pain and suffering on the earth? I have noticed that God wants each person to make choices for himself. He has given us the right to choose. He usually doesn't interfere, even when we want to hurt other people. That means that this life is for us to gain experience making decisions. Since there are countless stupid decisions for every right decision, I expect that God would give someone direction. I would expect that person to write it down. I believe that the Bible is a collection of such writings. But I believe that God did not just care about Jews, and so there must be other writings. I believe that the Book of Mormon is an example of such other writings. I have read the Book of Mormon and prayed to God about it, and I know that it is true. Through this, I know that Joseph Smith was a true servant of Jesus Christ and that Jesus Christ is our Savior.

How I live my faith

I try to help in my ward as much as possible. I am very interested in learning the best ways to present knowledge, and so I am always trying to figure out what people connect to best. Helping people who are in need is the thing that makes me feel the most meaning in life, so I would like to devote my entire life to figuring out how to use my own unique talents to serve people.

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

I think that a lot of hesitancy that people feel when they are told about a prophet that is alive today is because they may not entirely understand what a prophet does. A prophet is just a man that shares with other people what the will of God is. Prophets have always been human beings like the rest of us. I bet it would have been just as hard to believe in a prophet back in Biblical times. Imagine if you lived during the time of Moses, and people said that he spoke with God on a daily basis. Would you believe them? It is easy now because he lived so long ago, and millions of people have already believed him. It is important to know what God's will is for us, and sometimes we have blind spots where we just can't accept His will based on our limited understanding, and we need help from other people. The world is always changing. We really need continued revelation through a prophet, for the same reason that people in the Bible did. Right when the world was ready, God gave us another prophet - Joseph Smith. He was murdered, like many prophets in the past. God gave the world another prophet, and kept giving us prophets all the way down to the present prophet - Thomas S. Monson. I know that God chooses prophets because He loves us. If we pray and ask God if Thomas S. Monson is the man on the earth through which He is instructing us, He will answer us in our mind and in our hearts. God always answers us when we are open. I know that President Monson is God's prophet in our day. Show more Show less
