Hi I'm Shelby

I'm a student, future missionary, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Shelby, I was born and raised in the great city of Columbus, Ohio where I played field hockey for my high school and worked as a waitress at an Italian restaurant. This summer I moved to Provo Utah to attend school at Brigham Young University. I love playing the ukulele, running, and watching classic films. This January I will become a full-time missionary for the Church, serving in the Peru, Trujillo mission.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have a testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I know that God is our Heavenly Father and we are His children. I know that Jesus Christ died for us, and that it is through him that we can return to live with God again. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God who restored the true church back to the Earth. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, and that through faith, repentance, baptism, and the Holy Ghost, we can find happiness not only in this life, but in life hereafter. I have not always had this testimony of the Gospel, however. I have always been a member of the church; however I did not fully accept or understand the Gospel until my mother passed away when I was fourteen. My mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was given two months to live. During these two months, although they were the most heart-wrenching months of my life, I got to know my mother better than ever before. I sat down to listen to her stories and she told me about life. After she passed away, I was not sad. In fact, I felt as if someone had put their arms around me and was holding me, giving my a wave of peace. I know that I will see my mom again, and that my family will be together forever. Her last words before she passed away were simply, "I have to try." These words have become a guide in everything I do. I have to try to obey, I have to try to be a good example, I have to try to be Christ-like. I have to act, not be acted upon. I have a testimony of the Gospel. I know it is the only thing that got me through the passing of my mother, and it is the only constant in my life.

How I live my faith

I live my faith in everything I do. I believe my character to be a reflection of my faith, therefore I put my trust in God that He will lead me in the direction I am meant to go. Being at a college where virtually everyone is Mormon, I have the privilege of interacting with people who hold the same standards that I do; however, I have not always lived in a place where my faith was supported. Growing up in Ohio where church members are few and far between, people often questioned my beliefs and mocked my faith. Although my peers thought I was crazy for waking up at 5:00 AM for church seminary and going to church 3 hours per week, their curiosity in church gave me the opportunity to teach them about the gospel. Although my beliefs have been questioned by others, I stay firm in my faith because I know that this Gospel is true, and I wholeheartedly want to be as Christ-like as I can. That is how I live my faith.

Who is the Mormon prophet today?

Thomas S. Monson is the current prophet and president of the church. He receives revelation from God in order to lead the church. He has two counselors and then 12 apostles to assist him in the organization of the Church. Show more Show less
