Hi I'm Derek

I love music. I play the drums. I'm a record keeper. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My childhood was spent running around in my backyard in Paradise California, pretending I was off somewhere else on some wayward adventure. I grew up watching a lot of movies and losing myself in fantasy novels. I'm very nostalgic, which allows me to remember what specific times in my life felt like. I play the drums, having taken 6 years of private drum instruction and I love it. Over those six years I learned how to play Rock, Jazz, Metal, Funk and Afro-Cuban. My favorite genres to play are jazz and funk, but my favorite music to listen to is movie scores. I love music that inspires, edifies, and uplifts me. I also enjoy hiking, rock climbing, Ultimate Frisbee and beach volleyball. I have an amazing family that I love being with no matter the setting, whether it's at home or on vacation. I am also very fond of recording memories in my Journal for others to enjoy in the coming years. Few things are more important to me than accurately and consistently recording the events of my life. I don't really know why that's the case, but I just go with it and write as much as I can every day.

Why I am a Mormon

I was blessed with the opportunity it's to be raised in a Mormon family. That did not mean, however, that I appreciated it as much as I could have. I always knew, in the back of my mind, that the Gospel was true ever since I was a boy. I loved going to Church because I could see my friends and take a break from school, but I did not fully realize the importance of the Gospel in my life. It was not until I felt the cleansing and enabling power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ as a seventeen year old boy that I could begin to understand the love that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for me. With that understanding of the great love they have for me I have also come to understand that without the Gospel I would have nothing. I would be nothing. I can't go a day without praying. I can't go a day without reading the scriptures and without being reminded that I am the son of a loving Heavenly Father. I don't know where I would be or what I would do without that knowledge. I am so grateful for the the Gospel of Jesus Christ that allows me that kind of peace, assurance, and strength every single day.

How I live my faith

I've always been of the opinion that the best way to live your faith is to be an example of it. Recognizing that I have weaknesses and inadequacies, I strive to set to the best example that I can for those around me. Ultimately, I desire for others to see the character of Jesus Christ in the example I set and choose to follow Him. I've found that as I study and ponder the scriptures prayerfully every day and ask God what He would have me do and who He needs me to reach out to, He always leads me to those that need Him in those very moments. As I have chosen to turn outward and serve others as the Savior would God always blesses me in return. It really is by the simple ways that I exercise my faith that God helps me become the person He needs me to become.
