Hi I'm Mary

I'm a primary school teacher and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up in London but now live in the East Midlands. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to live in many different places in the UK. One of my favourite places in Bath, where I lived for a few years when I was a child. I went to university in North Wales, where I studied History, Heritage and Archaeology. I love anything to do with the past, history is a great passion of mine. Before and after university I spent some time traveling in Europe, American and Canada. I served as a missionary for the church in America, where I met some fantastic people. More recently, I went to Leicester University where I trained to be a primary school teacher. When I'm not working I enjoy reading, especially historical fiction. I love to visit Historic buildings and museums. I enjoy music and have just returned to playing the piano after a long absence. I'm also learning to play the violin, which has been a lifelong ambition. I enjoy cooking and collect cookery books, I had over 80 at the last count. I enjoy hiking in the beautiful countryside near where I live. I like to swim and go horse riding. I love tennis especially Wimbledon.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was 5, two Mormon missionaries knocked on my door. They left a pamphlet with my mother. It was all about the Prophet Joseph Smith. My mother had a strong feeling when she read it and that is how it all began. She joined the church but I was not old enough to be baptised. I attended church with her and began to learn about Christ and God. Some years later I was taught by missionaries to help me to be ready for baptism. I remember their teachings about Joseph Smith and I had strong feelings about what they told me. I was baptised when I was 8. Some years later again, at a low point in my life I committed to study The Book of Mormon. This book helped me to feel comfort and find answers to my many questions. I felt that same special feeling I have felt may times as I have prayed or read the scriptures. That book changed the course of my life. I remember thinking, this book is amazing and I want to tell others about it. This helped me to decide to become a missionary for the church and teach about Christ and his gospel. Although since then life has been hard and like everybody there have been ups and downs, God has always been there for me. I have learned so much through my struggles and I am a stronger person because of them. I know that God loves each and everyone of us regardless of race, age, gender or any other thing that the world may judge us by. I know he gave us commandments to live by, not to restrict us but, to set us free and enable us to return to him. I know that the Book of Mormon and the Bible contain the words of God through his prophets. I know we can talk to God through prayer, it's such a simple that anyone can do. He is our Father in Heaven.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by going to church every Sunday. It still amazes me how that simple act helps me each time I go. I read my scriptures daily and pray many times a day, whenever I need to talk to my Father in Heaven. I teach in church once a month. I teach the words of our church leaders, which I really enjoy because it means I read them more closely. I also conduct the music, which I have always wanted to do. I'm not the best conductor and some hymns are challenging but I love the challenge and that I'm developing a new skill. I also help out in nursery when I'm needed. I love being in nursery, they are a great bunch of children and I always leave smiling.
