Hi I'm Michael Potter

I grew up in the redwood valleys of Santa Rosa, California. I'm an athlete. I'm a student. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a bike enthusiast and I love to get on and ride around the back roads of Sonoma County. Sports have always been a huge outlet for me and I've been playing soccer since I was 4. I also played on my eighth grade men's volleyball team and ran track for my high school my sophomore and junior years. My hobbies include cycling, sports, painting, reading, camping, hiking, rock climbing, shooting, and swimming. I also love surfing, snorkeling, snowboarding, and SCUBA diving although I haven't been able to do those as much as I would like. I am a student at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. I am studying exercise science to become a physical therapist after grad school. I just finished my freshman year there and am preparing to go on a two year proselyting mission to Macon, Georgia this summer. I will be speaking Spanish and reporting to the Mexico City Missionary Training Center for my language and proselyting training. I have canoed down the north fork of the Flathead river in northern Montana. I have hiked up Yosemite falls with my family in tow. I have SCUBA dived the north shore of Oahu with my family. I have been snow camping near Tahoe. I have done multiple backpacking trips over several days in the wilderness.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because of my parents before me and their parents before them. I have a long heritage of ancestors who crossed the plains to escape violence and oppression to live and worship peacefully in the Utah valley, California, and elsewhere. I am Mormon because I believe that Christ is my Savior and died for me on the cross so that I may, too, rise again as He did and live with Him and His father again in heaven. I am a Mormon because I have felt the Holy Ghost influence my life for the better and I have witnessed miracles and blessings in my life that would have never come if I had made lesser choices. I am a Mormon because I have hope and faith that this life is a test and that when we endure to the end and endure our trials and struggles with patience we can learn all we need to return to live with our Heavenly Father in His royal courts above. I am a Mormon because I have a testimony of a young boy who asked his Heavenly Father which church he should join and he was answered that he must restore Christ's church to the earth. Joseph Smith restored the gospel in these latter days and through living prophets we know God's will and what we must do.

How I live my faith

Living my faith is very important to me because if I am not an example of what I believe then I am not truly a believer and my faith is lost. I am a teacher for the young men in my congregation (also known as a "ward"). I have been patrol leader and assistant patrol leader while in my local scout troop. Home teaching is very important to me and I enjoy getting it done.
