Hi I'm Spencer

I'm an Idaho native. I'm studying to become a computer programmer. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a college student who is currently going to BYU-Idaho. I like to use computers, and as such I have opted for a degree in computer science. Obviously I also like video games. I also like reading, politics, and long walks on the beach..... ok so scratch that last one. I am an eagle scout, and also part reluctant science nerd.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I believe that the gospel as taught by the LDS church is the only way I can make sense of the world. Having looked at the world in an agnostic point of view I can say that having the wellspring of hope which comes from the gospel is really the only reason I'm still alive. I believe the Book of Mormon to be true as I have studied it from a secular point of view and from the point of view that It is scripture. I have a true feeling of peace as I read it and it has mellowed out my opinions about the world around me. One of my favorite scriptures is Alma 26:8-9 "8 And these things have I written, which are a lesser part of the things which he taught the people; and I have written them to the intent that they may be brought again unto this people, from the Gentiles, according to the words which Jesus hath spoken. 9 And when they shall have received this, which is expedient that they should have first, to try their faith, and if it shall so be that they shall believe these things then shall the greater things be made manifest unto them." This scripture demonstrates that which has defined my life. I have only come across the truths I know by sticking with the gospel of Jesus Christ as I have struggled with my faith. You must determine what your desires are. If you want the gospel to be false then it will be false. If you are willing to put forth the effort and stick with it however the greater things will be given unto you. I believe the Book of Mormon is true and that It will enable you to have a fuller relationship with the Father and the Son. I testify that all the good and purpose in life I have found in this book. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ amen.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by trying to do those things which the Lord asks of us. This includes serving others every weekend instead of playing video games all weekend, going to church, and searching my soul for those things I have need of repenting of. I am currently preparing to serve a two year mission for the church.

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

Spencer
I'm sure there are many answers to this question which focus on the physical aspect. To me God has never given any commandment which is completely physical. If you are looking this answer up you are most likely a fan of the substances mentioned in the Word of Wisdom. To me this law is not so much a health law as much as it is a way for people to sacrifice. Faith is a principle of action, and the best way to grow faith is to act upon his word and to test it. The name Word of Wisdom also has a lesson as not only is it wise to live the law for the heath reasons, but it creates wisdom. Wisdom is the ability to harness knowledge in the correct manner right? I also argue that it is the ability to not allow your pride to prevent you from learning from others. This law is created to humble you and put you in position to learn from the Lord's spirit. It literally allows you to hear the words of wisdom from the source and to help you have the courage to apply those principles in your life. Show more Show less
