Hi I'm Garth Despain

I'm a dad, software sales guy, scouter and a Mormon. When people learn I'm a Mormon, it leads to interesting questions!

About Me

In my employment I enjoy working with and coaching enterprise software sales teams and the companies that are our customers and prospects. While selling and helping solve technology-related problems is interesting, in my time away from work I like having fun outdoors including scouting activities. My favorites are hiking, biking, going to the beach, campfire cooking and camping. My hobbies include woodworking projects and playing musical instruments -- mostly piano, organ and the harmonica. My wife and I enjoy playing tennis and watching our children compete in cross-country, baseball, soccer and basketball.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents taught me the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and how to be a good Mormon. For many years I simply believed what I had been taught. As I began to make more decisions for myself and to think more independently from the beliefs of my parents, I sought and received personal confirmations from God that what I had been taught was right and true. My life experiences show me there is a God who loves us as his children and he is interested in our welfare, growth, and accomplishment. While all have personal weakness and challenges, God's grace and mercy are sufficient to save us from sin and death through the sacrifice of his son, Jesus Christ. He is our perfect example and our Savior and Redeemer. Jesus Christ organized a Church based upon a foundation of prophets and apostles. The Church he created was destroyed and changed, but has been restored to the earth again through a modern-day prophet, Joseph Smith. The Bible, the Book of Mormon and other writings and revelations of authentic prophets and apostles helped establish the Church and continue to guide and direct it today. Knowing that God lives and loves us, that Jesus is our Savior, that there is a source of truth where we can look for guidance and direction -- all of this and more provides me with great comfort and inner peace, even in a world filled with turmoil, war and evil. My life has been blessed by my faith in God and in receiving His quiet, peaceful confirmation in my mind and heart that these doctrines and principles are true.

How I live my faith

An essential aspect of my experience as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) has been the opportunity to serve others in many different ways. From missionary service in Venezuela when I was a young man to more recent experiences as a scouting leader and bishop, Church assignments throughout my life have helped me develop love and compassion for others, helped me improve teaching and leadership skills, created friendships and treasured relationships with people, and provided a sense of belonging, identity and purpose that has been complimentary to my individuality and desire to be involved in community service.
