Hi I'm Tom Shaw

I was born in Birmingham, England & my mother's family have been in the church for four generations. I'm a Mormon

About Me

I have been married to my sweetheart for 40 years. We have three lovely children & five wonderful grandchildren. I have a degree in Food Technology & my occupation is as a manager in Research & Development. I enjoy family history, football, tennis, DIY, cycling, travel, gardening & being outdoors in the countryside. I served in the Territorial Army for period. I am a fourth generation Mormon & my maternal great grandmother joined the church in 1906.

Why I am a Mormon

I have lived in this world for over 60 years. As a scientist I have seen the miracle of life through a microscope & at the other extreme, the vastness of space. I believe that this is so intricate that it did not happen by accident. It is part of a larger plan & that these things were organised by a loving God & that mankind is at the centre of this sacred plan. I was baptised as young boy when my father joined the Church. At that age you trust parents &, in time, there comes that day when I needed to know for myself of it's truth. In that search I wandered away for a while, but returned with a strong conviction of my own, that this was the true restored church of Jesus Christ & that the plan of happiness described by Book of Mormon prophets was of God. That I was one of His sons & that He loved me, powerfully, regardless of my weaknesses. It all makes so much sense with our prior life, the purpose of this life & our potential as eternal beings being together in our families for ever. I know who I am, that I have a higher purpose. Like a toddler, I will stumble & fall, but through repentance & the atonement of Jesus Christ, I can be forgiven & continue to climb the stairs to heaven. I believe God & His Son to be just & so He has placed a living prophet to represent Him here on earth, to receive revelation concerning these days & guide those willing to listen, as He did in the days of Noah, Abraham, Moses & the days of the apostles after the Saviour's resurrection. In this complex world we need that guidance more than ever. Many gospel principles have helped me in my career, such as prayer when making decisions or in resolving problems. It really works! Education & learning, in regard to the gospel & the world, is a strong principle which has been a great benefit in my life.

How I live my faith

The church is run by volunteers not paid clergy. I have had the opportunity to serve in many roles in the church as part of my priesthood duties. This has involved teaching, leadership, training & acts of service both within the church & in the community. This is very much a church where the individual matters, whoever they are, for everyone in this world is a son or daughter of God. It has been my privilege to help others & to feel the joy of service.

How can I know Mormonism is true?

Tom Shaw
Unique among all of the religions of the world, the Book of Mormon invites each individual to appeal directly to our Father in Heaven to ask Him if this is the true church of Jesus Christ. This is the true test, when all of the teaching is over. Only He can answer this. However, before you ask you must commit yourself to acting upon the answer you receive. Show more Show less
