Hi I'm Becky Shiner

I live in California. I'm married, a mom to two great sons, a grandmother, a retired teacher, love the ocean and genealogy!

About Me

In my youth, I lived in southern California and Hawaii, right near the beach, and so I grew up sailing, snorkling and always looking for shells. I studied to be a biology teacher, but ended up teaching high school chemistry, which I have enjoyed. As a little girl, I loved listening to the stories of my ancestors, which has resulted in my great love of doing genealogy. Sharing my expertice and helping lots of people find their family members has been so much fun! The best part of my life is my family! I am happily married with two wonderful sons and two delightful grandchildren. Spending time together camping, walking the beach, canning salsa, arm wrestling, BBQing, swimming, playing games...the best!

Why I am a Mormon

Although my mother was raised a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I was not as a child. My paternal grandmother was a devout member of another church and she took my sister and I to church every Sunday. She also read me stories from the Bible and it is from her that I grew to love the scriptures. When I was nine, the Mormon missionaries came to our home. My mother wanted me to know of the teachings of the Mormon church. Decades later, I can still recall those teachings, and I felt they were true and I wanted to be baptized. A short time after my baptism, our family moved several times and it was not until I was a teenager that I returned to church. When I heard those teachings again, I felt them reconfimed to my soul...and gradually, as I studied and prayed, and learned more, the truthfullness of the gospel teachings continued to be confirmed to me. It was during a very difficult time in my missionary service as a young woman, however, that I I truly came to know that my Savior, Jesus Christ knew me, personally, and loved me. Later, while watching a video at one of the Mormon visitor centers about current prophet, it was as if he was speaking to me directly and it was born to my soul that he really was God's prophet on the earth. Testimonies that Joseph Smith was called as a prophet and that the Book of Mormon really is the word of God containing the writings of the prophets of the American continents have also come in similar ways. These testimonies, and the many times I have felt the direction, love, answers to prayers from my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are of greatest importance to me.

How I live my faith

In my local church congregation, I have served as a family history consultant for many years and I volunteer at a local Family History center I have helped many individuals learn how to research their family lines, using internet resources and computer programs. I have participated in community clean-up projects. I have been a Den Leader for Cub Scouts and am an active merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts of America. I have also volunteered as a sumertime Waterfront Director and camp counselor for 15 years for summer girl's camp programs. I visit the homes of some of the women in my church congregation on a monthly basis to share messages of encouragement, listen to their concerns and offer support when a need arises.

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Becky Shiner
The blessings you can receive from reading the scriptures are many! There have been times when I was worried about my sons, unsure of decisions to I had to make, counsel to give to others I work with...and I would go the the scriptures, say a prayer, open them up and start reading. With a prayerful heart and faith, many times a verse or two, or a story, would open up my understanding and provide the direction I needed. Reading the scriptures is truly a balm for the soul.
