Hi I'm Derek

I'm a historian, science fiction geek, avid outdoorsman, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hmmm... I'm not so sure of what to put here. I am a husband of a beautiful, strong, and quite independent woman, father of three beautiful children, and I'm a geek. I am a historian by trade and a college professor by accident. Seriously, what else do you do with a history degree? I grew up active in the Boy Scouts, where I fell in love with the outdoors. I have backpacked many miles on the Appalachian Trail and have been fortunate to go to Philmont twice. I was also a band geek, but never played any instrument better than the radio. I served a voluntary mission for the LDS Church in Moscow Russia. I later met my future wife in Russian classes at the University of Georgia. Go DAWGS!

Why I am a Mormon

When I was 17, I took a year and explored all the churches I could. After attending, studying, and pondering each, I took it to the Lord in prayer. Each time I did this, I felt confused or uncertain. This continued for the better part of a year. It was not until I prayed about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that I felt the peace and comfort of the Holy Spirit, confirming that this was the church where I could find the Spirit of our Heavenly Father.

How I live my faith

Perhaps the biggest way I live my faith is by trying to follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit in all decisions I have to make. Some choices are hard, such as how to provide for my family, where to move... some choices are small, such as what to do with the family on the weekend. The most important part of living one's faith, in my opinion, is learning to follow those promptings we receive from Heavenly Father through the Holy Ghost. I also serve in various positions in my local church.
