Hi I'm Jessica Van Alfen

I grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am the oldest of five kids. I will be serving a mission in Milan Italy. I am a Mormon.

About Me

Ever since I was little I have always loved getting to know people. Because of my love for people, I became very involved in lots of activities throughout high school. I loved playing volleyball and was on the team all four years. I was very active in many clubs such as Student Council, National Honor Society, Pep Club, and Raising Student Voice and Participation. I wanted to make a difference and help others enjoy high school as much as I did. Being so involved gave me many opportunities to meet and get to know a very diverse group of people. Each person I came into contact with taught me very valuable lessons. I then went off to college at Brigham Young University in Provo Utah. I loved the uplifting environment it provided. College also gave me the privilege to learn from other people. I finished a year at BYU, and now I am headed off to serve a mission in Milan Italy. I am so excited to serve the Lord and the people of Italy and to learn and grow from this beautiful adventure I am about to embark on.

Why I am a Mormon

Both my parents have been members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints their whole lives; so I grew up going to church every Sunday, and I was baptized when I was eight years old. When I was about 14 years old I went to a church camp and realized that I needed a confirmation for myself. I no longer wanted to rely on my parent’s testimony of this gospel. I wanted a testimony of my very own of Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and Jesus Christ. So I prayed. I prayed for a long time talking to my Father in Heaven telling him that I know my parents know this gospel is true, I know I feel good when I read the scriptures or go to church and pray. I never doubted the doctrine and principles taught were true; I just needed to ask for myself and put Moroni 10:4-5 to the test. It was a very powerful moment when I felt a peace rush over me. I knew that peaceful feeling was the Holy Ghost manifesting the truthfulness of this gospel to me. I knew for myself that what I had been taught throughout my whole life was in fact true. I had to have my own conversion. Since that point I have not doubted for a second that Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers. I have been so blessed throughout my life to have this knowledge. The gospel of Jesus Christ has brought such joy to my life that I want to go out and share the message of Christ with everyone. I know this gospel is true with all my heart, and that is why I am going out to serve a full-time mission to bring others to Christ, so that they can take part in the joy I have experienced in my life.

How I live my faith

While I was at school I was called to be the president of a group of 40 sisters. My role in that calling or assignment was to watch over and serve the girls. I also was asked to plan and carry out activities that would give the sisters an opportunity to learn and grow. We planned activities that would give the girls a chance to strengthen their testimony and get to know one another better. I was also able to teach lessons and bare testimony of Jesus Christ. I was able to get to know each sister on a very personal level and know what her needs were. Serving and loving every single girl as if they were truly my own sister was such a wonderful privilege. As a whole group we were able to become a family and lean on one another in times of need and celebrate and support the joyous times of our freshman year.
