Hi I'm Matt

I grew up in Richmond, Virginia. I was homeschooled, and now to go BYU. I am a classical pianist. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am currently studying Music Composition at Brigham Young University. In other words, I like creating and listening to new and original music. In BETTER words, I like creating and listening to music most people cannot stand to listen to for more than a minute. I find more joy out of music than anything else in my life (except for the gospel, obviously). I'm an avid runner, and enjoy everything about basketball (except the Miami Heat), fencing, chess, reading, wasting time on the internet, the outdoors, and learning or experiencing anything or meeting anybody new! Oh, and I'm going on a mission in the beginning of July to the Philippines! I'm too excited for the experiences that await me there.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I feel my Savior's love in the world around me. The earth is beautiful! I don't think people spend enough time enjoying it's brilliance but instead spend time thinking over what things they need to do that day, or what other people did or said that they don't like. While I would be a hypocrite to say that I don't do that sometimes, I like to focus on the positive and find beauty in the people and places around me. Living the gospel standards, reading the scriptures, going to church, praying, and doing service allows me to more fully appreciate God's creations. In a nutshell, I'm a Mormon because life's better being one. I feel like I should say more... I choose to be a Mormon because it fills me with hope. With today's society becoming evermore passive to religion due to scientific advancements, global awareness, and material wealth, religions around the world are deteriorating at a depressingly fast rate. I don't pretend I have the ability to try to convince anybody that I can PROVE the church is true, and I don't think anybody else can either. (If I could it would be contrary to God's plan.) Only the Spirit of the Lord can testify of that, and it can only come to people who have an open mind and a willing heart. I'm lucky because I've been raised in the church all my life, and that the Spirit has testified to me that the gospel is true. It fills me with hope and love, and to become a better and happier person.

How I live my faith

I was called to be the ward organist when I was 13, and have always enjoyed playing the hymns. I'm not the greatest organist--I can barely play the pedals. The hymns hold inspirational nuggets of doctrine in them that most people don't quite realize. My favorite hymn is probably Press Forward Saints, but I have several others that are close to claiming the top spot. It is a dream of mine to publish a hymn I created. I also live my faith by the time and energy I spend with my family. Most people my age don't enjoy the time spent with family because they don't share the same interests or annoy them or whatever. I love my family and the time I get to spend with them, even when we don't see eye to eye.
