Hi I'm Darin

I live in Boston. I go to dental school. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I grew up riding four-wheelers and motorcycles with my brothers. I like hiking, camping, and playing sports. I enjoy reading fantasy books and am currently reading the 14-book saga The Wheel of Time. I have been married for 4 years and we just recently had our first child - a cute baby girl. I speak Portuguese that I learned while living in Brazil on a mission for my church. I now get to use Portuguese everyday when treating patients as a dentist. Next year I will be joining the Air Force as a dentist.

Why I am a Mormon

I feel that the concepts taught in this church give greater meaning to my live and give me a broader perspective and understanding of the value of my life and the choices I make. The Book of Mormon contains examples that help reinforce the idea that Christ is my Savior and knows me personally. I read about how he answers people's prayers or helps them in specific ways during their times of need and I know that he will do the same for me. Just recently my wife and I had a very scary experience when we were expecting our first child. The doctors told us she had terrible genetic abnormalities that would make her deformed and cause her to die at or before birth. Together with extended family members my wife and I prayed and fasted just like people in the scriptures did. We tried to know what Heavenly Father wanted us to do and if it was His will for this baby to live or die. A miracle happened and week after week when we visited doctors problems would be gone. Last month we gave birth to a perfectly healthy and normal baby girl. I knew long before she was born that Heavenly Father was aware of us and that whatever happened was part of His plan for my family.

How I live my faith

My responsibility in church is to be a mentor for the missionaries and help them to find people to share the message of Christ with. I often go with them into people's homes to teach and share my feelings about the church. I go to a very large school in Boston with a few other mormon students. We get together often with people from our church and with other people we meet through work and school to watch movies, play sports, host dinners, and go on day trips around the city. Recently, I was able to join a large group of volunteers to help out in New York cleaning up the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. We went to people's homes that we didn't even know and were not even part of our church just to help them clean out water damaged portions of their homes. It was great to see how much work could get done when so many people come together to serve for one cause.
