Hi I'm Sam

I love music. I sing and play piano and trombone. I am currently serving a full-time mission in Sacramento. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Music is a major influence in my life. My favorite activity is playing four hand improv on the piano. I'm in a men's choir called Because We Sing! and I had the opportunity to sing a solo in the tabernacle. I was also the head drum major of my high school marching band. I marched with the BYU Cougars last season and will be returning to study music after my mission. I love being out in nature, particularly while camping, mountain biking, or rock climbing. Scouting has always been a big influence on my life as well; I received my Eagle Scout award in 2012. I am currently serving as a missionary in Sacramento California speaking Spanish.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been a Mormon all of my life, but I know the church is the true Gospel. I know it is good and brings joy in life because of what it has done for me. My life used to be filled with negative feelings: anger, envy, and depression. Because of Christ and the teachings of His church I have moved away from that toward hope and love. I know it is true because I have felt the influence of the Holy Ghost, giving me comfort and helping me to find the truth. I know my Heavenly Father cares about me and has a plan for my life and that He wants me to be happy. No matter what hardship I may experience, I know there is a reason for it, and that everything is a part of His plan. I know that through Christ's Atonement everything will work out for the best in my life. The Gospel allows me to grow closer to Him and become a better person.

How I live my faith

During my senior year of high school I was the Stake Youth Council representative for my ward. This was a great experience discussing the needs of the youth and preparing to speak in various meetings for the church in my area. In my student ward at BYU I was the Music Chairman which means I chose the hymns we were going to sing each week and the pianist and chorister for the week. I also asked different people to help perform a special musical number in our meetings throughout the year, particularly in our Christmas and Easter programs.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

We do not worship him. There is a beautiful song called 'Praise to the Man' which is about Joseph Smith and how incredible his life was. I love this song because I have great respect for Joseph and he is an example and a hero to me. However, he was a human, a man with faults like any other. He accomplished amazing things because God was with him, he still had to rely on God. We pray only to our Heavenly Father in the name of Christ, praying to anyone or anything else cannot bring the blessings of heaven. The life of Joseph shows how an ordinary man can accomplish incredible things through the help of God. Show more Show less

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

There were many people involved in writing the Book of Mormon, prophets of God who passed the records from father to son. Eventually the prophet Mormon had all the records of the other prophets. He quoted certain parts and summarized others, making sure he included only the most important things. He said the Book of Mormon only contains one one-hundredth of the information he had from the others. Also, he was being hunted by his enemies who wanted to destroy him and the records. Everything in the Book of Mormon was included for a reason. The power of the book is real and significant. I know it is the word of God and He truly wants us to have it in our lives. Anyone who reads the book will come to know Christ better and feel His love more. Show more Show less
