Hi I'm Derek Hoopes

I have grown up all over the world and traveled to many different countries. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love to play soccer, run cross country and wrestle. I love art and when I have the chance to draw I will do it. My most favorite thing to do though is travel and sees different cultures. I was born in the United States and for about the first ten years of my life I traveled and lived in many states. But because of my dad’s job we had to move to Guam USA for two years. While I was in Guam I had the chance to visit Australia. When our time to move came, we chose to move to London England. When we got to England the whole continent of Europe and Africa was at our fingertips. We went to Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Israel, Morocco, Holland, Scotland, Spain, Crete and many other small Mediterranean islands. For three years I traveled and saw many different cultures and learned many lessons that have now changed my life. When our three years in England was up we moved to japan and that meant more traveling. We went to china, Korea, Thailand, and Okinawa. I am now going to be serving an LDS mission to Las Vegas Nevada.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because every day I wake up I go to seminary, I go to youth groups and on Sunday I go to church. During the week I get to start my day out by studying about Jesus and feeling the spirit. I go school and I get to be an example by living my faith. I am able to be a missionary and bring others closer to Christ. I am a Mormon because I want everybody to feel the joy that I feel every day of my life. I am able to rise above those around me and set an example. My life isn’t trial free and it isn’t very easy but because I have chosen to live my heavenly fathers standards that he has put on this earth, I am able to face my trials and troubles with help from my heavenly father and the other members of the church around me. Every Sunday I am able to renew the covenants I made at baptism by taking the sacrament. I am able to feel my heavenly fathers love and I hope that others can find the truth and come closer to Christ.

How I live my faith

I am one of the very few youth in my ward and one of the even fewer that attend the high school. I wouldn’t say the school I go to is bad but it isn’t a very easy environment for a member of the church to grow up in. This isn’t the first time I have been in a school like this and almost since I have been going to middle school it has been like this because of the places I have lived. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ I have to really make sure that I am being an example to the other youth and to the people around me at school at sports and at work. I have been a constant missionary to all of those around me because people do see that I am different. One of my friends actually joined the church because of the example that I set and because of the example of others. I have three other siblings who are LDS youth and we make up a big part of the youth group where I live. Because we live in such a small LDS community my mother is our seminary teacher and she has to work very hard but I do my part to help her by being the seminary president. I go every morning with her before seminary starts and we set up and I stay late with her after to help take down. Yes, I can say that living my faith isn’t easy but it is worth it. All of the different trials I face help build my testimony and prepare me for my mission.
