Hi I'm Tony

A life-long Oregonian, I just traded my cool NW rain forests for the Philippine hot tropics for 2 years. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Since I was 11 and became a Boy Scout, I have felt at home on the trails of the Pacific Northwest and spent as much time hiking as a 42 telecommunications year career and family and church responsibilities would allow. I grew up in North Portland and attended 12 years of Catholic Schools, as the 2nd of 9 kids (7 boys & 2 girls). In 1972 I began the journey of married life with Mary Anne Meckes; a trip that has blessed us with seven children and 34 grandchildren. In 1974 two young men rang our door bell (which seldom worked) and our lives took a new course closer to the path that Jesus walked than we had ever ventured. After a half hour porch conversation, they asked if they could come back to talk with us about Family Home Evening. Seven lessons later we had committed to baptism which took place on March 23, 1974. Now it is over 40 years since that great day. I have grown closer to my Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ and have often felt the influence of the Holy Ghost guiding my life. Yes, I have the entire Godhead on my side!

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I found the whole truth and have felt that witness of the Spirit over and over in my life. Many times I have received confirmations from the Spirit as I've sought to determine if the answers I've come to on my own were correct. God has not failed me in this, ever. I describe that feeling of confirmation as the morning sun rising on your face and chest; a feeling of warmth and light and love. It is real. It is physical. It is spiritual. I am a Mormon because families joined together in the sacred Temples will be together forever if they live up to the covenants made there. I have seen the deaths of two of my grandchildren and I want to meet these noble souls again on the other side of the door we call death along with so many other loved ones who have gone before me. I am a Mormon because it is for all of God's children who will listen to the truth and act upon it.

How I live my faith

I study the life of the Master and his servants; ancient and modern to see how I can more completely follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. We are currently serving as full-time missionaries in the Philippines Urdaneta Mission where we support members and leaders as well as serve as the mission secretary and supply manager. We also are allowed to work alongside over 200 missionaries and leaders who, like us, are giving all of their days and hours to the Lord for 18 months to two years. We are talking about serving another mission soon after this on ends. It's a great life! It takes focus and effort every single day to make the right choices and always maintain myself in a manner that the Holy Ghost can be my constant companion. The scriptures, sacred music, talks by church leaders, prayer and pondering are the tools that give one the edge to make it through this challenging life.
