Hi I'm Eileen

I grew up in Huddersfield, married an itinerant musician. I am a mum and a grandma, taught primary school. I am a Mormon

About Me

I've recently retired so you'll have to guess my age ! Retired that is from primary school teaching although I've worked in an office ,been a post woman, shop assistant, a village play group leader and a missionary for our church between times. I started teaching full time 40 years ago .Then moved to London where I taught in a private Jewish school . It was great fun as I got to know other teachers who were as passionate about their religion as I was about mine. I soon learned what a solid foundation to our faiths we both shared. Several times though I mistakenly tried to get the children to do things they weren't allowed to (like throwing in the bin scraps of paper that had the scriptures on in Hebrew). The children delighted in putting me right! I served a mission in Scotland where I met my future husband and we had one son. Now I am a delighted mum and a grandma. I love reading,( in the middle of the night usually as I am useless at sleeping) especially biographies of ordinary people who have done something extraordinary with their lives. My husbands work takes him abroad and I have had many trips with him.Have loved the history and art of St Petersburg, the simple rich variety of the Caribbean, the majesty of the Norwegian fiords, the pristine cleanliness of the Alaskan mountains and the bustling frenetic cities of Shanghi, Ho Chi Min and Hong Kong.I still do some supply teaching ,drive for a charity and steward at our local theatre plus work at church

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I believe it's doctrines and believe that they matter. My parents joined the church when I was eight years old so I have had almost a lifetime of seeing how the teachings of the church are practical and prove their worth for all generations of people. But more than that I have read and studied the scriptures, including the Book of Mormon prayed about it, lived their teachings to see how it works in practise .I've come to the conclusion, after some spiritual experiences and following my gut feeling, that it's true! I have made loads of mistakes and sometimes been just plain wrong but the gospel is there to help me get back on track. I have learnt to appreciate it more and more as time has gone by. I am a Mormon because I love it, it's true and I need to be one!

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith in all areas of my life but have varying degrees of success! At church I am involved in activities that help to bring the doctrines and practices of our church more to the attention of the general public. We want people to have a correct knowledge as to who we are and what we believe in. Sometimes I report on activities at church for local newspapers or write up accounts of missionaries from our area or missionaries coming into our town. A while ago I organised for some of us to join in the Forget Me Not Trust charity collection day. If there is anything,to do with our church, that we think the public may be interested in ,then along with a team of colleagues, I try to bring it to their notice. We love to have people of all faiths and persausions come through our doors for whatever reason. At church we women also have a programme of visiting each other in twos to try to ensure that our members are well and happy whether they come to meetings on Sunday or not. It is part of my responsibility to see that this is organsied. In the past I have worked with the youth and the children in their organisations usually in a teaching capacity. Tiring but loads of fun and very worthwhile!
