Hi I'm Afton

i'm a student who loves to make art and rollerblade and be mormon.

About Me

greetings! i am a student at brigham young university pursuing a career in public relations. i grew up in southern california on a love of the beach and all things music. i love swimming in the ocean and running on the land, and i adore my current home in utah for its regal mountains and breathtaking hikes. art, sports, and foreign languages all pique my interest--as well as the lovely city of chicago, where i had the most profound blessing of serving a spanish-speaking mission. while all these things are close to my heart, what i cherish the most are my relationships with family, friends, the savior, and my father in heaven.

Why I am a Mormon

i know that this is christ's church on the earth today, led by him and given power from on high to provide the ordinances necessary for salvation (like baptism temple ordinances) that our heavenly father wants us to have. while i can find truth in just about every religion or church organization in the world, it is the church of jesus christ of latter-day saints that offers me the fullest and most complete array of truth on the earth, because it is all sanctioned by christ. i know this because i have experimented with the truths i have been taught here. i have prayed about them, acted upon them, and found fruits of joy and endless confirmations that the book of mormon and words + teachings of the modern-day prophets are true. i have learned that revelation did not cease after the bible or with the deaths of christ and the apostles. heavenly father has reached out to reveal to us more about his nature, character, and divine plan for us when the world was ready to receive more. i know that he called young, humble joseph smith to be the first modern-day prophet in this time period. the more i learn about him and the history of the early church, the more heart-pounding, undeniable confirmations i receive that this is the true church of christ. that heavenly father established it in a confused world because he loves us so, so much and wanted to tell us more about himself and his plan for us! knowledge of that plan is where i have drawn strength in the midst of my own personal trials. it has helped me to be grateful for them, because i know they are sacred, refining experiences given to me from a loving heavenly father. learning about him, his son jesus christ, and his servants every week at church opens my eyes to the reality of christ's sacrifice for me and for all mankind. reading the book of mormon shows me how personal that sacrifice was to me. i am a mormon because of how this church has brought me profoundly closer to my father in heaven and my savior.

How I live my faith

i live my faith through daily repentance and expressions of gratitude in prayer to my heavenly father. it is my greatest comfort to know that i can be in constant, open communication with him throughout the day--when i need help and strength that i can't muster on my own, when i've messed up and am nervous and unsure how to proceed, when i need guidance or a tender mercy, when i can't explain my feelings or mood in words and just need someone to listen. to have that channel open 24/7 between heaven and our challenging and sometimes mundane world is a blessing i could never live without. daily prayer, scripture study, and weekly attendance of the church and temple are the most crucial ways i have found to continually progress in living my faith. i'm not perfect at those things, but know how significantly they impact my life when i am perfect at trying to do each one. full immersion in this church and the opportunities it provides (to serve, widen my circle of friends and loved ones, and learn about christ's character and how to emulate him) gives me a self-confidence that i cannot find anywhere else in the world. it helps me understand my identity, gifts, and huge worth as a daughter of god, and how he wishes to use me to bless his other children throughout my life and bring them closer to christ. he truly has a specific, pre-designed plan for each of us. asking my father about that plan in prayer--seeking to do his will, and then acting on the answers i receive--is how i best live my faith. sharing it with others is the culmination of my daily joy.
