Hi I'm Maddy

I'm a wannabe ski bum. I sing along to the radio. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

What a loaded statement. I love bright colors, especially when found in gardens and floral arrangements- my guilty pleasure. Marimekko is my favorite brand/designer/way of life. Think bold patterns from the '60s. I've just finished my first year of university and seemingly ended it with more questions than answers. There's so much I want to know, so much for me to learn. You might say I'm a learning addict. When not devouring "Time" or "The Economist", I'm either on the ski slopes or searching after any ounce of sunshine.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in this church, I learned its doctrine while I learned to read and write. I continue to be a Mormon because I know these doctrines are true. This gospel brings peace and joy. It brings light to impenetrable darkness. My ancestors joined the Church while working in the Welsh coalmines. I visited one of these mines recently and only then began to appreciate the light Christ brings. In the 1800s these mines were completely dark- have you ever been in a deep cave when someone turns off the flashlight? The darkness is overwhelming. Though Christ's message didn't bring my ancestors electricity, it lit their souls. This light comes from knowing the Christ loves us. We have a Father in Heaven who loves us infinitely. He knows each of us by name. He knows what makes us giggle, but also our deepest fears and insecurities. These fears are not erased, but rather made insignificant through God's love. Christ atoned for my sins and sorrows, he felt every ounce of emotion I've ever experienced. He has walked a lifetime in shoes perfectly molded for my feet. He did the same for every person who has ever lived and those yet to live. Their love has illuminated my life as it illuminated the lives of my ancestors. This gospel makes me a better person. It brings me peace and comfort. It brings me purpose.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by being me. It's doctrine and principles are such an integral part of me. I show my faith by confiding and trusting in our Father. Prayer tends to clear my mind as I focus and ask for guidance. I find true peace while I pray. It's the peace found while playing the piano, but on a much higher level. How else do I live this faith? I live my faith by helping others in my neighborhood and community. These are simple acts of service, mind you, but every bit counts. Just like my mom said, "When you're helping, you're happy." I live my faith as I love my family. Living away from them has brought this home to me. The family is central to this church and my faith in it.
