Hi I'm Nathaniel Verhaaren

I grew up in suburban Illinois, and I am a missionary serving in the Oregon Eugene Mission. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, called to the Oregon Eugene Mission, and presently serving in the Florence Ward in the Coos Bay Stake. Before I began my mission I completed a year in college at the University of Chicago, and I plan to major in math and computer science - or maybe physics. Those things interest me and matter to me, but I know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the most valuable thing we can grow to understand in our lives. I enjoy playing and listening to music, and I like to read. I also enjoy bike riding, canoeing and kayaking, and I love to experience nature. I am an Eagle Scout and enjoyed bonding with my scout troop.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have received a witness from God that this is, as He said, 'the only true and living church on the face of the whole earth' (Doctrine and Covenants 1:30). I was born into the Church, and this set me on the path, but anyone can gain this witness by reading, pondering, and living the message of the Book of Mormon and asking God in sincere prayer. I know that this gospel - the message Jesus Christ has for us - is true and is what has the most potential to give us true joy and peace, and is ordained of God so that we can return to Him. In serving my mission, I have seen the great effects of studying and living the gospel on those I teach, and come to recognize how it blessed my own family. The improvements in our lives stand with the witness of the Holy Ghost that this church is of God - that is why I am a Mormon. Also because of my mission, I have learned the great importance of truly living the gospel. That means loving others sincerely, serving them with no thought of reward, and forgiving them wholeheartedly. If I did not do this I would lose closeness with God and the foundation of my faith would fade. Living the gospel is what gives me the spiritual strength to hold on to what I already know to be true.

How I live my faith

Living my faith centers in my relationship with the Savior, Jesus Christ. Because of His great love for me, He took it upon Himself to pay the penalty for my sins, undergoing death and unimaginable pain to do so. Because of His sacrifice, I can return to live with my Heavenly Father. Understanding the love Jesus has for me is the center of my faith and the basis of my life. Because of Him, as I repent - or turn to God - I can be forgiven and be made clean from sin - rebellion against God. Doing so daily is a great part of my faith. As a missionary, I have the opportunity to share the gospel every day, and help people to overcome their individual challenges. I invite everyone to come unto to Christ, exercising faith in Him and turning away from evil, being baptized for the forgiveness of their sins, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost to guide and bring peace in our lives. As I study and teach the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, I feel the Spirit and share this with others. I also do service and worship at the temple whenever I have the opportunity.
