Hi I'm Kieren

I grew up in Ohio. I study music and physics. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Right now, I am going to college at Brigham Young University. I am studying Music and minoring in Physics. Some people think that is a weird combination, but they are connected in so many ways. I am part of BYU's Acoustics Research Group and I love learning about different instruments and how they make sound. I play the piano, violin, harmonica, guitar, steel drums, dulcimer, sanza, and recorder. I am taking cello lessons this semester and I want to learn all the instruments! I love to listen to music and write music and explore different sounds. There are so many beautiful sounds around us and I love to explore how they are made and how they can be combined into wonderful pieces of music. I also love sports and learning new sports. I love soccer, ultimate frisbee, and basketball. I have recently taken up racquetball and tennis. I am still working on getting coordinated with a racket. Sometimes I look ridiculous, but I usually play with one of my best friends, so she just makes fun of me and we move on. Another thing I love to do is cook. I like trying new recipes from different countries. I especially like Indian and Italian food. I just love exploring new things and learning new skills.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because it makes me so happy. I grew up in a Mormon home where my parents taught me Christian values and how to be a good, charitable person. I have had a great life so far, but I have also had my challenges. Whenever I am feeling down or doubting my worth, I always turn to the gospel of Jesus Christ to find the comfort I seek. I have read the Book of Mormon and I read a bit of it just about every day because it brings peace to my life and helps me find direction. I love learning about the life of Jesus Christ and I have been reading the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) recently. His life and example are truly amazing! I want to become like Jesus Christ and I want my life to be centered around Him. Living what Jesus Christ taught has brought me peace and joy and when I have a family of my own I want them to have the same peace and joy.

How I live my faith

I have a lot of hobbies and interests, and sometimes it is hard to balance everything. I have found that when I put God first, everything else falls into place. Some of the most important things I do are serving other people and the community. Recently, some of my Mormon friends and I volunteered at a nearby memorial park and cleaned up the park. I helped re-dig some tree circles and clean up leaves and sticks that were cluttering the park. It was such a fun time and I felt good that I had helped make my community a better place. I am also a Family History Consultant in the church, which is where I teach family history classes and help other people discover their family history. I used to think that family history was just for old people, but it's not! The old people are the ones that we are researching. Maybe that's a weird way to say it. But anyway, its super cool to discover ancestors and learn their stories. My favorite site to use is familysearch.org where I have a family tree that has generations and generations of my family. I have found out so many interesting things about my family, like how I have a great (times 5) grandmother who came to America and pulled a piano across the plains in her handcart! Maybe that's part of the reason I love music so much. Another way I like to serve is as a visiting teacher, which means that I have a few girls that I visit each month and ask them about their lives, give them treats, and see if there is any way I can help them. I also have people who come and visit me and I know I can rely on them and ask them for help anytime I need it.
