Hi I'm John

I was born, and grew up in rural Aberdeenshire and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a happily married man with three grown-up children from a previous marriage. My wife has six children from a previous marriage so birthdays and Christmas are always hectic. I have retired from work but I'm kept occupied by caring for my wife full time. When I'm not doing that, and I have the energy, I like to help those around me with their challenges. I have made many friends and enjoy doing things with them and sharing time with them. I like to be in the outdoors, getting physical exercise through recreation and work, listening to music, reading, and getting to know new people.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons) because, having been taught the rudiments of the gospel of Jesus Christ, I was challenged to think and pray about what I had read and been taught. As I went through this process of study, meditation, and prayer I began to realise the truthfulness of the message shared by the missionaries, and of the church they represented. These feelings grew within me to the point where I was sure it was true and that I needed to accept them, be baptised and confirmed a member, continue to study, ponder and pray, and do everything I could to follow Jesus Christ's example. I can now say that, because of the many confirming experiences I've had over the years, I know we have a loving Father in Heaven and that his son Jesus Christ is our Saviour and Redeemer. He continually beckons to us to "Come follow me" and instructs us "What manner of men ought ye to be? Even as I am."

How I live my faith

Our church, other than essential maintenance and admin. and other staff is essentially run by its' members. I am one of these members and willingly accept 'callings' that are prayerfully considered, confirmed through prayer, and extended to me from time to time by those representing the Lord and holding his Priesthood. Through this service the members grow in confidence, in spirituality, in ability and talents, and in love of God and all mankind. Over the years I have served groups of all ages including Scouts in administrative and ministering capacities. I have experienced great joy from working with these groups and continue to do so every year. In the church we never retire from 'active service'. No matter how old we are we can contribute to the work and feel a valuable part of the overall church. The Lord Jesus Christ is at the head of our church and through him we worship our Heavenly Father. We know that he answers prayers when we need those answers, and in the way that we need to be answered. One of the things that distinguishes the church is that we have a Prophet leader who represents the Lord, presides over us, and receives inspiration and revelation from God to guide the whole church and even the whole world.

Why do Mormon missionaries proselyte?

There are several scriptures in the New Testament and in the Book of Mormon that record Christ's instructions to his disciples to take the gospel message (the good news) to the four corners of the earth. In other words to everyone on the earth. Show more Show less

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Just like the Bible it is a book of holy scripture recorded by holy prophets. It is a record of God's dealings with the peoples of the ancient Americas whereas the bible is a record of God's dealings with the peoples of the Middle East / Holy Land. They saw our day and recorded those things that would be of most benefit for us. Show more Show less
