Hi I'm Derek Rowe

I'm from Seattle, WA (United States). I live in Wiesbaden, Germany. I like driving on the autobahn and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have a beautiful and mischievous toe-headed son a little over two years-old now. For him, I have my radiant red-headed wife to thank. I am learning a lot about myself being a dad. I like to keep in shape, mostly by running and lifting weights. I like to read classic books, do maintenance work on my car, and watch movies. Sometimes I play the piano. When I can, I love to hike in the mountains. Since moving to Germany a couple years ago, my family has enjoyed traveling every now and then. Not too much though, because it takes money to travel. I love driving on the autobahn. If you are late getting somewhere, you can go faster and pick up a few minutes without breaking the law. We have moved around a lot with my job. Although it is always a lot of work to pack/unpack/organize, I kind of like moving. Moving helps me recognize what is most important because there is so much change. It is also an opportunity to make new friends and get to know different lifestyles and different cultures.

Why I am a Mormon

As a teenager I read the Book of Mormon and prayed about it. That prayer was answered in a clear and memorable way. So I remained a Mormon. I was initially baptized at the age of 8 because my parents are both Mormon and they raised me to participate actively at Church. Not all the members of my family are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That is ok. When I had just turned 20 years old, I served a two-year mission for the Church, like many active young Mormons do. It was a turning point in my life. I learned to speak Spanish, and to teach the gospel in Spanish. Although I had read the Bible twice before serving my mission, I really developed a relationship with that book as I served on my mission. I've never been the same since, in a good way. I also saw firsthand the power of the Book of Mormon to change lives. I know God speaks to us through the Bible and the Book of Mormon. They are different than other books. They are designed by God to speak directly to our heart.

How I live my faith

I like going to church. One reason I like it is because I get to know other people who are trying to be more Christ-like. There are a lot of people I associate with at church who have developed deep and strong faith in Christ. Getting to know them helps me as I try to live better. Another reason I like going to church is because of the opportunity to take the sacrament (communion). I know as I take the bread and water with a repentant heart, I am made clean and whole. Over time, this has come to be more meaningful and powerful to me. Right now I am very involved with the young men groups. I attend their activities each week and their sunday school class. I also really enjoy talking about my faith with others not of my faith. I like doing that mainly because living my faith has made me a better person; so I believe it can help others as well.
