Hi I'm Katelyn Shumway

I'm from Salt Lake City, Utah. I'm a Cancer survivor. I love to sing. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am serving a Mission in Jacksonville, Florida, and loving it! I come from a family of nine, and I am the second of seven children, four of which are girls, so I can proudly say that I have seen every Barbie movie and My Little Pony episode. I enjoy swimming, singing, American Sign Language, Cued Speech, making balloon animals, volleyball, hiking, and reading.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been raised in the LDS church all my life, so I was always told that the church was true but I didn't really know for myself. On my 18th birthday one month before I graduated from High School I was diagnosed with cancer. Afterwards I found it very easy to feel sorry for myself. I was very shy and I didn't really tell anyone what was going on. I remember when my friends would complain to me at school about how they had to wake up early or had a ton of homework. I would almost get angry inside, wondering how I was supposed to feel bad for them. It was easy to wallow in self pity. Everything changed though when I went into the radiation clinic for the first time. All of the sudden I was the lucky one, I had hair. When I got home I prayed to my Heavenly Father and asked Him to help me find the silver lining in the situation. After that night my perspective changed, I made it my goal to make a patient or doctor laugh, or make a new friend every day at the clinic. Before long I was too busy making people happy, for me to feel sad or even afraid. It got to the point that I was comforting my family and friends, when they came to offer comfort to me. It was then that I learned that I have a Father in Heaven who loves me and each of his children, and wants what is best for us even if we don't understand it yet.

How I live my faith

I love working with people, especially children and special needs individuals. I have worked with a youth group to provide activities for the special needs individuals in our community, as well as with the cutest class of 5-7 year-old boys, they are so full of life and energy. I have also had the opportunity to make balloon animals at fundraisers for children battling cancer. Currently I am serving a Mission in Jacksonville, Florida. I love meeting new people sharing with them the joy I have found in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Katelyn Shumway
The Book of Mormon was written by the ancient inhabitants of the Americas, who wrote so that their posterity would understand what they believed. They shared their knowledge of Jesus Christ, who he was and what he had done for them. Every page is another testament of Christ. I know that the Book of Mormon is true because I feel the power of God when I read it. I know if you read the Book of Mormon and pray with a sincere desire to know the truth, God will let you know through the power of the Holy Ghost. Show more Show less
