Hi I'm Olivia Casper

I'm 24, a wife, trainee counsellor, part time carer. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Growing up I was one of 5 brothers and sisters (i'm number 4) and we're all pretty close in age so it was a total mad house. I grew up in Reading! which I thought was the best place in the universe. I moved away at 19 to do an Art degree in Leeds and that's where I met Tom, we got married in 2010. I am nearly qualified as a counsellor. My interests are reading, creating things, running, hanging out, listening to music, baking and psychology.

Why I am a Mormon

Why I'm a Mormon? This is a big question with a long answer! Where to start?! Well I gained a testimony of Jesus Christ when I was around 13. At the time I went through some really difficult problems at home & thats when I really started to pray. I would pour out the feelings of my heart to God in prayer & came to know him personally and feel of his love for me. I never forgot those experiences but when I was around 17 I chose to go down a different path. I had seriously low self esteem & thought that if I could be popular in college & have a really hot boyfriend then that would validate me as a person. These things became more important to me than spiritual things. I started doing the things the world tells you will make you happy. I was a big drinker/smoker/partyer: but when I was on my own, I was utterly miserable. I didn't like the person I'd become. I felt a huge black void inside that felt alconsuming. I wanted to come back but I never thought I'd be able to change my lifestyle. The real crux came when I was in my first year of uni at this point in time I had stopped going to church for years. My housemate was quizzing me about Mormons cos he knew I used to be one and he asked me 'how did it all come about?', I remembered my mum packed my scriptures in my stuff so I dug them out - dusted them off and we read together Joseph Smiths account of the first vision and the angel moroni. As I was reading it I believed that this man was telling the truth of his experience. I felt pure joy and pure truth as I read it. After that experience it was a serious struggle to come back and change my lifestyle though I knew that I had to follow my heart. I'm a Mormon today because I know it's Christs Church restored on the earth today. I believe there is great wisdom in it's teachings, principles that when lived bring long term happiness not short term pleasure. I am the happiest I have ever been, I love the person I am today because of it.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by doing a lot of voluntary work in the Church, such as working with the younger ladies (from 12 - 17 yrs) I'm the leader of the beehive class (the 12 yr olds.) It is so much jokes! I love it. Working with two other adult leaders we organise activites for them every tuesday night and teach them gospel lessons on Sunday at Church. In the last couple of weeks for example we've been with them to lazerquest, had a sleepover, been to the cinema followed by krispy kremes, taken some of them to pizza hut for doing this challenge. (I could literally go on for ages about how awesome working with the youth is) There are alot of active things I do in church that are ways in which I live my faith.. but for me living my faith is a personal aspect that involves spiritually nourishing myself everyday. It is hugely important that I remember to pray/meditate in the morning and before I go to bed. I try and study the scriptures for an hour every morning, (I dont always manage to get up in time to do, but It is the absolute best way to start the day) Living my faith means trying to be a better person everyday. It's similar to what Carl Rogers in counselling calls the self-actualising tendency. Living what the gospel teaches and trying to follow Jesus Christs example, makes me feel more confident, happy, relaxed, healthy the list goes on and on!!
