Why I am a Mormon

Although I was born and raised in this church you can not live off of borrowed light forever. Everyone, at some point, must challenge and test their beliefs. I was a normal rebel teenager going to school and trying just to have fun. I would attend morning church classes called seminary every day, mostly becasue my parents made me and it was expected of me. That year we were learning about Joseph Smith and all he had done. Hearing his sacrifices and trials really caught my attention. I began thinking about him and what he said he had done. At the same time, not coincidentally, my ward decided to have a Book of Mormon reading marathon in which we would read the whole book in 24 hours. I thought, if I could ever read the Book of Mormon, now is the time. The months of ponder and thoughts beforehand had opened my heart. As I read I felt the Spirit. After that night I kneeled down and asked Heavenly Father, exactly as Moroni directs. I felt a warm tingling feeling all over my body and I know it was the Spirit of God telling me that, yes indeed, Joseph did what he said. I can calmly say that I know that God lives. He loves us and we can talk and commune with Him through prayer. He loves us so much He called a prophet to restore the truths of His Gospel back on Earth for all to have. There is a prophet today. I have seen him and heard his face and I know he is chosen from God. Christ is our Savior. Through him we can live with God again.

How I live my faith

I have the responsibility to organize ward prayer. This occurs once a week on sunday nights after our weekly church meetings. I choose people to do a short spiritual thought and then as a ward, we kneel down and offer a prayer. After we provide refreshments and snacks to the ward members. Its saweeet.

What do Mormons believe is the purpose of life?

Stephen Wirthlin
Learn to Love. I feel this encompasses everything God plans for us. We have to learn to love ourself, our body and our personality that God gave us. We have to learn to love our families, friends, and even enemies. Ultimately we have to simply learn how to love God. If we love Him, we will do what He desires of us. We will forget ourselves and magnify His name and glorify his work. There are so many things in this world fighting for our heart. This life is about giving it to God. Show more Show less

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

Stephen Wirthlin
Many ways are laid out in which we can come closer to our heavenly Father. Prayer is a one way telephone that never loses service and always has battery life. Scriptures are His words, and often He speaks to us through them. But... In short, I think simply by "hanging out" with Him we can come to know Him. If you spend enough time with anyone you will begin to know them and not only that, but through the power of association, you will start to be like them. We can "hang with" God by inviting Him to spend time with us. In other words praying to have his Spirit with us where ever we go. He won't go every where we go however so we must always "stand in holy places" or make where we stand holy. If we go where He can be, do what He would do, and always invite Him to be with us soon His image will start to be seen in our countenance. Show more Show less

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

Stephen Wirthlin
In science and nature I become overwhelmed with the feeling that there must be a creator. Just thinking about the infinite stretch of space. I take a lot of science classes in school and it is really admirable how much we have discovered. Yet every time there is a wall. Science can answer only so many questions and then, well, its darkness. I feel that there is God not simply through science's unanswered questions or nature's wonders that perplex me. I feel it most when I see other people, strangers one to another, help each other. When I see good being done all around the world. Every race, tongue, social status, and salary cap. There is good out there, inside all of us. This turns me to my God. The source of this light. I know He is, because I see Him in the good deeds of men. Why do we do good? Where do these desire come from? I think it is inherent among us. We are children of a perfectly kind and good Heavenly Father. It is in our genes. We possess inside of us goodness from Him.
