Hi I'm Jason

I'm a family man, a scholar and a Mormon.

About Me

I was raised near the Snake River in Southeast Idaho by great parents, and having detoured through Cordoba Argentina as a missionary and then Albuquerque New Mexico as a graduate student, now make the Monterey Bay Area of California my home as a professor of economics. Here, with my beautiful wife and adorable children, we enjoy spending time playing on the beach, exploring the coast, looking for wildlife, hiking the trails, and in baseball, basketball, soccer, scouting, and cooking, gardening and serving in the Church. I teach economics to students from across the world (here and in other countries), and I research best management practices of natural and public resources. I like to think of economics as the science of commons sense. I'm a common-sense kind of guy so I find great joy in investigating important complex issues then presenting them in a way that many can understand.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon because the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, and because the Holy Spirit has let me know that it is true. I am fortunate because my parents taught me about Jesus and His gospel since as early in life as I can remember. Learning the gospel from early on is like feeling the sunshine on a warm sunny day. I felt the warmth and truth of the Savior's teachings around me. But just like we learn why some days are warm and how to keep warm on cold days, the gospel teaches me how to live so that every day I can feel the Savior's warmth and truth. Jesus Christ is the source of light and truth, from Him all spiritual warmth radiates. Following Him through the path He set forth helps me to enjoy, and share with others, days filled with light and truth. I'm a Mormon because following Jesus makes me happy, and living His gospel with my family helps us prepare to live with Him again. And that is awesome!

How I live my faith

I live my faith, one day at a time, doing the best I can to draw closer to Christ by serving my family and my fellowman. I pray and read the scriptures each day, and try do so with my family as well. This brings peace and harmony to my life and to our family life as we learn more about the gospel. We go to Church on Sunday then reserve time during the week, usually Monday nights, to study the gospel together, do fun activities and finish the night off with a fun dessert. We also like to engage in family outings and find ways to spend time together, which might be recreational activies, helping a friend move, sharing a meal with someone in need or some other service opportunity. Through His prophets, the Savior has taught that when we are in the service of our fellowman we are in the service of our God. Whether the place is at home, at work, at Church, or wherever, finding people to serve is finding ways to serve God. So I live my faith through service, because that is what Christ taught and that is how He wants me to live.
