Hi I'm Philip

I grew up in Tooele Utah. I love music and I currently play 5 different instruments. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love music. I started playing the piano at age 7, and ever since then, music has remained an integral part of my life. My primary instrument is the cello, however I can also play electric bass, upright bass, sousaphone, tuba, drums, ukulele, and I am learning to play the guitar. I have participated in several various musical groups such the Idaho Falls Youth Symphony, the Idaho Falls Opera Theatre, several pit orchestras, jazz band, marching band, and orchestra. I plan on serving a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have just received my mission call to the Chile Santiago East mission. I am so excited and I am so grateful for this opportunity to serve the Lord.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the church, however I wasn't truly converted until recently. I have always been taught that true conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can only come through prayer, pondering and the spirit. So, once I was finally old enough to understand this concept (which was in my early adolescence-about 12 or 13 years old), I followed Moroni's promise in Moroni 10. After reading the Book of Mormon in its entirety for the first time, I knelt to pray and ask God if the Book of Mormon is true and if His Church is true. In reply, I was almost immediately overcome with a calming feeling of peace and warmth. I knew right away that this feeling was the Spirit testifying within me that that which I have asked is true. Since then, I have studied and prayed numerous times to reaffirm my testimony that His Church and the Book of Mormon are true, and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet who restored the church to the earth to today, and that Jesus Christ is my personal savior and that He lives.

How I live my faith

In my ward, I am currently the choir director. I have been choir director for some time now, but was not easy at first as I was called the position shortly after turning 17. Most of the choir members are in the later years of their lives, so as you can imagine, it was pretty nerve-wracking at first. Though eventually, I learned to step out of my comfort zone and in a way, learn to view my fellow choir members as peers as we sang and prepared music together.

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the official name of the church, however we are often referred to as "Mormons" because of the Book of Mormon around which the teachings doctrine of the church is centered. The Book of Mormon is filled with teachings by ancients prophets. One of these prophets named Mormon -after whom the book was named- was the one who abridged and compiled the Book of Mormon.
