Hi I'm Tim Powers

I was the Head Swimming Coach at BYU for 37 years and I am a Mormon!

About Me

I grew up swimming and surfing in Northern California. I am the father of two daughters and 9 grandchildren. I enjoy sports cars and guitars. Before being named as Head Coach at Brigham Young University I taught and coached high school and club for 5 years. It was my privilege to also serve as a Captain in the United States Army. My oldest daughter was born while I was deployed to the Republic of Vietnam and was 4 months old before I got to see or hold her. As a coach I had the privilege to work with young men and women of talent and accomplishment. I also had the honor of serving as the President of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America and was selected to represent Division 1 Men on the NCAA Swimming Rules Committee. I received a BS from the University of Montana and a Master of Arts from San Jose State University. I have been married to my sweetheart for over 46 years now.

Why I am a Mormon

There are many reasons why I am a Mormon. Most importantly, I have read, pondered and prayed about the Book of Mormon and have received a witness that this book is true; that Jesus is the Christ; that He lives and atoned for my sins as well as every mortal being; that by and through His merits, grace and love we can live with Him once more. I am a Mormon because by living the commandments of Jesus Christ I have an opportunity to become more like Him and have a greater desire to do good and be a blessing in the lives of my family, neighbors and community. I am a Mormon because it brings me happiness and joy to know that as I repent and strive to do His will He blesses me with confidence and with the Holy Ghost to guide me through the trials and tribulations that characterize our mortal existence.I am a Mormon because God is not dead nor doth He sleep. He is alive and His church is set up as it was when He walked the earth. That church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am a Mormon because His church makes me want to be more like Him.

How I live my faith

I am currently working with single adults between the ages of 18-30 who are mostly University students by helping them strengthen their faith. I have served many positions throughout my life in the church. Some opportunities that I have had to serve include: Bishop and Bishop's councilor, Stake High Councils, High Priest Group Leader, Sunday School Teacher and Full Time Missionary.
