Hi I'm Harley Cortez

My home is So-Cal. I will be a good father, husband, and worthy Priesthood bearer. Missouri Independence Mission .May 2013-2015

About Me

The baby of 3 kids, I was born to two loving parents in Los Angeles County My Father is not a member of the church, and my mother was baptized when she was younger in Mexico. I got the name "Harley" from my father, because at the time, he wanted a "Harley-Davidson" motorcycle, but could not afford one. My family is my driving force, and I know an Eternal family is possible if I uphold my covenants I've made. I've lived in California my entire life, but I have always had dreams of traveling. Jerusalem, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, Nepal, Japan, Africa.. I've always wanted to understand the diverse cultures we have all around the world, because I know that each one of us are sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father, and I feel like I have a duty to understand my brothers and sisters and guide them towards a better, happier life, in whatever way I can. The scriptures have become a vibrant part of my life, and being a missionary serving in the "bible belt", my studies have been intense, and rewarding. I know that life outside of the mission can be difficult for a return-missionary to adjust to, but I know that my nature, and not just my behavior has been changed, and if I continue to hold fast to the covenants I've made, My conversion will be made sure, and i will truly become a man of God. God will maintain our cause.

Why I am a Mormon

We are promised a witness of our Father in Heaven and our brother Jesus Christ if we keep the Covenants we have made with Him.. I have not physically seen my God.. but i have felt his touch, I have heard his voice, and I have had very sacred experiences while using His Priesthood. My vision of him has been limited to dreams, but I believe I will kneel before His feet one day, and my Belief will become an absolute knowledge. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because I have seen many promises from my God become fulfilled. I challenge and invite all to receive their witness as I have.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by trying to be Perfect. Lorenzo Snow, a prophet in these last days, gave counsel to strive for hourly perfection. He explained that if a man does this, he will find that he may succeed one hour, and the next hour fail.. but no matter the outcome of the first or second hour, the man has an opportunity to succeed the third hour. How beautiful is that? the grief and pain that is associated with failure cannot bear us down if we resolve ourselves to "hourly perfection"...all that is required is sincerity and diligence. I try to understand the how and why of failure each time it comes around, and I resolve to be better and have the courage to change. For the longest time, I always thought that others around me who were somewhat acquainted with me would accuse me of being "insincere" in my intent, or two-faced in my choice of actions.. Time and effort had to be spent for me to gain my witness that trying to change regardless of outside influence is crucial.. not just for our own self-development, but for our relationship with God as well.

What is the First Vision?

Harley Cortez
As a boy, Joseph Smith was surrounded by various churches which, though they disagreed with on another, each claimed to teach the truth. This caused him much serious reflection. He wanted to know which church was right. One day he read a passage in the Bible which says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (James 1:5). Joseph decided to accept the invitation to ask God. In the spring of 1820, Joseph went to a grove of trees near his home and prayed to learn which church he should join. In answer to his prayer, Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, appeared to him. Joseph wrote: “When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” Joseph was told to join none of the churches that existed at that time as the priesthood authority and Church as Jesus Christ had organized it when He was on the earth had been lost over the centuries. Joseph Smith’s First Vision marked the beginning of the Restoration of Jesus Christ’s Church to the earth. Joseph’s written account of this event is a powerful testimony of what he saw and experienced. Show more Show less
