Hi I'm Hennie

I grew up in the Netherlands and without religion. I experienced many miracles. I am a father and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My name is Hennie and I am a father, writer and a Dutchman. I enjoy watching movies, playing squash and video games.

Why I am a Mormon

At a certain point in life, I wanted to find a church that I could support. I prayed to God and asked him to send someone to me. I had no idea where to start. Not long after, two missionaries of our church were at my door. I learned a lot about this religion and found that I already believed in most of the teachings. I prayed about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and the church and received a confirmation that it is true. Even though we are all individuals, having our own interpretations about certain parts of the gospel, the church bring us together as a unity. We can discuss topics and help each other understand. We study and pray about everything taught to make sure that we know it is true for ourselves. We accept the leader of our church as the prophet, but we pray about his teachings to know whether they are of himself or of our Heavenly Father. I do this regularly and know the prophet is called of God. His teachings come from our Heavenly Father and this church is the church of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

In my local church, I organize activities for single members. I also visit other members and assist them where needed. I also enjoy talking with others about the gospel in an open way with respect for them and their beliefs.

How can faith in Jesus Christ influence us in our marriages and family relationships? in our friendships?

Hennie
When we put Christ at the center of our relationship, this will increase respect, patience, understanding, perseverance and every other attribute Christ showed us. He will guide us and teach us how to express our love for each other and how to be an example. We also get an eternal perspective. Our marriages last for time and all eternity and this motivates us to be more proactive in making our marriages work. Personally I am in a situation where it doesn't work anymore between my wife and me. We have not made any rash decisions and tried everything we and our leaders can think of to repair the things that are broken. Unfortunately, as with me, sometimes marriages still do break up. but Christ will give strength and make this less likely. And when it does happen, Christ is there to support and comfort you. How can we stop the spread and influence of pornography?

Hennie
Pornography does lead to many forms of behavior which will cause problems in marriages, friendships and other important relationships. It also puts a distance between you and God. It is important to stay away from it. I am personally happy that the government here in the UK has blocked all pornographic websites. I can no longer accidentally stumble upon them. you have to make a conscious choice to opt-out and be able to visit them. I believe this is a first step and will lead to more people feeling God's influence in their lives. First of all, we have a personal responsibility not to watch it, then we are responsible for the protection of our own family against it. This can be done by using internet filters and such. If it becomes a serious problem, it may really be worth disconnecting the internet for a while. It is then the responsibility for governments to stop it the best they can. The church also has an addiction recovery program. When you visit this, you do not need to disclose your name, your addiction or any personal fact. Just read and soak up the words of God and his servants as well as the words of those who have conquered it. This program has already helped many people worldwide. Show more Show less

What is the Church’s position on abortion?

Hennie
We do not know exactly when the soul enters the body. This is at some point during pregnancy. Termination of pregnancy is always a form of killing and should not easily be done. There are only very rare cases in which it is absolutely needed. We feel strongly about this and want to advise everyone to prevent pregnancy by not having sex before marriage. When it does happen, we would always advise to go for adoption rather than abortion. Yet, every situation is different and we should pray, study the scriptures, ask for a blessing and talk with both religious and medical experts to come to a decision. It should never be done lightly. Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

Hennie
We pay a tithing to the church because we feel that everything we have been given comes from God. We want to do something back and the old testament teaches about tithing. I feel it to be a priviledge to pay my tithing and show God that I love Him in that way. Of course there are many other ways to show Him that I love Him, but tithing is unique as it is a clear sacrifice. It has also blessed my life with having to budget around paying tithing. It has taught me how to be wise with spending money and to save. Show more Show less

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Hennie
Everyone is welcome at church, and I do mean everyone. We follow the teachings of the savior and feel we should love everyone. It doesn't matter if you feel that you are not living according to the teachings of Christ. If you want to join our meetings out of curiosity, because you have some questions or for whatever reason, just find your nearest branch or ward and feel free to come in. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Hennie
Missionaries are trained to get to know you and the spiritual needs of you and your family. They will discuss the work of the savior and the restoration of the gospel. They will give you a message of hope and peace. They will not be forceful, but rather friendly and they will show a real desire for you to find out for yourself that these things are true. Missionaries care about everyone and want to make sure everyone is as happy as they can possibly be. they know this can only be accomplished by following the gospel. They will motivate you to seriously investigate and take steps to get your own testimony. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform proxy baptisms in their temples?

Hennie
God is merciful and will not let people perish without a chance to accept Him. We believe that those who past away are still being taught the gospel. They do not have a body or the ability to be baptized or receive any other ordinances. We provide these for them. That way, these souls can accept and progress as they would do here on earth. We do not believe they are members of the church and have to follow our teachings simple because we have baptized them here on earth, but we believe that if they want to, they can because of our efforts here. What do Mormons believe about the Bible? Do they regard it as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Hennie
The Bible contains the word of God written by important prophets and apostles of the Lord. These teachings are as important as any other teachings we have in the church. We do believe however, that the many translations have caused confusion and mistakes to become part of it. We have the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price and the teaching of modern day prophets to properly understand the bible. Show more Show less

To what do you attribute the growth of the Church?

Hennie
I know the church is true and all those who will investigate the church with an open heart will find it to be true. Many people are trying to find the right religion and come across this church. They investigate its teachings and pray about it. The testimony they receive is strong and powerful and they join the church. For those who are already a member, it is fun and exciting to be a member. Of course there are times it is difficult and people may sometimes make mistakes, but the church provides so many activities, discussions, social events and other ways to have fun that it has become more than just a religious institution. It has become a way of life. A part of every aspect of your life. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Hennie
Basically, the word of wisdom teaches us to live healthy lives. It talks about certain substances, but to me it goes further. The principals taught in this passage are more than a few things that are harmful. It is teaching us to treat our own bodies with respect, caring for it the best we can. Going to sleep on time, exercising, having showers and everything is part of this to me. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Hennie
We live like everyone else really. We have a family, work, school, we play sports, go to the cinema etc. Of course there are some differences as we refrain from damaging substances such as alcohol and tobacco. We also stay away from certain types of jokes as they are disrespectful to the creation of the world and our body, but we do have fun and make jokes all the time. In general, you will not notice a Mormon when he works with you or anything except for him/her not drinking coffee or tea, not drinking alcohol etc. We believe all this leads to a healthier life with more real joy and happiness. What is Mormonism? OR What do Mormons believe?

Hennie
We believe the same authority the apostles had on earth was restored through Joseph Smith who spoke with God and Jesus Christ. He was also inspired to find a historical book, written by the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and translated this. This collection of books is the Book of Mormon, named after the prophet who brought all of it together. We use the bible, the book of Mormon and some other books as our scriptures to learn about Christ and his ministry here on earth and beyond. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

Hennie
We believe that God is our Father. He is the Father of Christ and Christ is our brother. We are literally His children and have therefore a special band with Him when we want it. He will always be there for us no matter what we do. God has a body, as tangible as ours, but it is not the same. It is a perfect body which cannot die, is not subject to sickness and pain. He looks like us. Show more Show less

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

Hennie
The body is a temple of the Spirit. It is a creation of our Heavenly Father and we should treat it with respect. When we are immodest, we show to others that we do not care that much about our body. We should live a modest life to prepare for the wonderful moment that we find a person to share our lives with and become intimate with that person. It is a way for others to know that you respect your own body and that you respect others'. Personally I think it is important that my partner respects her own body and I feel like I can have a much more stable relationship with someone who respects her body than one who doesn't. Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

Hennie
I always compare it to a company because you are signing a contract with God. When you sign a contract in the name of a company, but not have the right authority, this contract is still of personal value, but will not last. If it is done through the right authority, the contract is as valid as it can be and all things promised in it will come true. Show more Show less
