Hi I'm Leanda Akuoko

I'm a Londoner, I'm a Medical Student, I love my Saviour Jesus Christ and I'm a Mormon

About Me

I was born and raised in a place called Hackney in London, where it was just my mother and I. She worked extremely hard to make sure that although I had only one parent in the home, I would have the same opportunities as anyone else. At the age of 2 months, I had open heart surgery to treat a severe heart condition that I had. My exposure to hospitals (in particular the childrens' ward) is what sparked my interest and love for medicine. I moved to the United States when I was 18 to attend university, in the hopes of becoming a paediatrician some day. I LOVE children and I also love medicine, so it has always seemed like the perfect career for me! I also love getting to know people and learning more about them. I love the fact that every single person has their own story and I enjoy meeting new diverse people and seeing where they have come from and where they're going.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have a knowledge that I have a Father in Heaven who loves me and wants what's best for me. I know that I have a Savior Jesus Christ who suffered and died so that I can return to live with God. I also know that with the love that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for us all, they would not leave us on this earth alone, without the guidance and support of the Holy Spirit, and a representative here on earth, who is the living prophet, Thomas S. Monson. The restoration of the gospel meant that the priesthood power to bless, heal and minister used by Christ and His Apostles has retuned to the Earth. I am blessed with the opportunity to see tender mercies of the Lord and blessings in my life EVERY DAY, because I know how to look for them. Membership in this Church has taught me how to constantly strive to be a better person, and to seek comfort in my Savior when times get tough. This knowledge helps me to be happy. There are of course times when I get down, and discouraged, but I seldom feel real despair, because I am quickly reminded that trials only last for a small moment, then the blessings come. I feel like I can be completely fearless because as long as I try to do the best that I can, the Lord will cover the rest, and He is Omnipotent!! In terms of the things that matter most in life, being a Mormon (Latter-Day Saint) has given me the understanding that life is really simple, and it's easy to be happy and find peace. We just have to allow ourselves to experience joy by remembering our Lord and Savior, and following in their examples. Being a Mormon is the single aspect of my life wherein there has been NO wrong. The gospel is perfect, and to me, that is what "Being a Mormon" is all about.

How I live my faith

I have been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints my whole life, and I have found that my beliefs have played an integral part of my decision making and the way in which I live my life. I have been taught to live my life in a way that is positive, with a real understanding of the things that matter most. With this knowledge of having a larger perspective, I make decisions based on what will make me happy in the long run, and that has really helped me! I have had the opportunity to participate in many service projects in being a member, and although I am young, I've been able to teach and hold leadership positions in my ward. Sharing the gospel with others is something that I strive to do, because I know of the comfort and blessings that have come from my life in knowing the Plan of Salvation, and I wish this same happiness for other people.
