Hi I'm John

I'm a Law Student. I'm one of the Lads. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am nearly 22 years old, currently studying Law at University. Its hard, but I like it. I'm not sure what I really want to do with my life, being a lawyer is obviously an option but we will see. I work part time helping people get back into work, teaching employability skills. I come from a large family, and we all live pretty close, my grandparents and uncles and aunties are always at our house! I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 11 years old. To be honest, compared to other illnesses and diseases people suffer with, I consider myself pretty lucky. It is sometimes a challenge and I often wish I didn't have to deal with it, but like I said, so many people have it much worse, so I can't really complain. I love spending time with my mates! Tom and Ben, they are proper legends! We usually have a Lads meal once a week at least, and see each other almost everyday. We try and have our own little adventures as often as possible, going on road trips to London or weekends away to Ireland or other European Countries! One of our classic adventures, along with the other lads James and Duncan, is to do the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, which is to walk/run three large hills/mountains in Yorkshire, covering 22 miles in a day. Last time we did it, the conditions were awful, with snow everywhere and climbing the final mountain in the dark! It was intense! We also love to dance.... like, party dance, not slow or ballroom... Dance and House music!

Why I am a Mormon

The easy answer.. My Mum taught me to be one! But if I'm honest that isn't really true. If I didn't believe that it was true, I wouldn't still be doing it! I have had a number of experiences in my life, where I have felt that God has taught me that the Book of Mormon is true, that Jesus Christ is the son of God and that God loves me. As a result of these experiences, I have come to understand and believe that its true! Mormonism is true! That is all a little abstract... I guess what I really mean is that I believe that God has given mankind a way to be happy. He has given us this through Prophets and Scripture. If I follow the teachings of the Prophets and Scriptures, and try to be like Jesus Christ, I will be happy. Isn't that what everyone wants? To be happy? I know that it works. All you have to do is try it. That is what I believe. That God loves me and wants me to be happy. And he loves you and wants you to be happy. Sometimes it doesn't feel that way, as things from outside our control bring us unhappiness. But it is only through these experiences that we can truly be prepared to enjoy happiness forever, not just happiness for now.

How I live my faith

Believing in something is easy... living it can be a whole different ball game. I try to live according to what I believe the best I can, but I'm not perfect. Generally I try to be friendly to people and to look for opportunities to help people. I believe that there are two aspects to living what I believe.. first, I need to try and personally be my best self, by making good choices and doing what I know God wants me to. Secondly, my relationships with others. It is important to be a positive influence on those around me rather than a negative one, and although I don't always, I want to be able to leave everyone I meet with them feeling better than when I first saw them. I am responsible for organising events for the 18-30 year old unmarried people at church in my area! So we try and have a lot of fun. Often this includes dances, food and as many people as possible! We have had events including 'nerf' wars, bonfires, BBQ's, water sports, visits to the beach and a winter ball! Although organising these events is a main part of my responsibility, it also includes being a support and leader for my peers. Late teens and 20's are difficult years for anyone, and people have a lot of problems and challenges, and I try to be a friend to everyone and someone that they can rely on.
