Hi I'm Ryan Porter

I grew up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and I love music and radio. I'm a missionary. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have a lot of interests and hobbies. My greatest passion is music, whether it's listening to or making it. I'm a classical baritone, and I play the piano, Irish whistle, and English handbells. Other hobbies of mine are amateur radio, model railroading, computer gaming, collecting, and reading.

Why I am a Mormon

I have been attending church since I was very young, but it was never because my parents wanted me to. I've always felt the Spirit at church, and when obeying the commandments and studying the scriptures. I'm a thinker, and when I think about what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has, and compare it to other churches, there is no doubt in my mind that the organization of this religion was ordained and inspired by God. My testimony of the power of prayer is from a 50-mile hike my Stake (county-sized area of LDS branches) youth went on. The group got lost a few times, an individual got lost once, and we had many other challenges to face in the Sierra Nevadas; however, every time we prayed, we either found our way, or in one instance found the young man who had wandered off, and we were strengthened for our journey. The power of prayer was manifested in such a tangible way that I cannot deny it. I also took Moroni's challenge in the Book of Mormon, to pray about it. It wasn't instantaneous for me, but I have received a testimony that it's true. I encourage others to take the challenge as well.

How I live my faith

I am a full-time missionary for the Church until Summer of 2018. Every day, I study the word of God found in the scriptures, pray, and work hard to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone I meet. This two-year commitment requires me to devote all of my time and attention to serving the Lord and my purpose, which is to invite people to follow Christ by developing faith in Him, repenting of their sins, and completing the ordinances of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost so they can endure to the end. Prayer and scripture study are the central ways I express my faith. I'm imperfect, and I acknowledge the Master's supremacy, so what better way to learn from Him than to study His words? These actions keep me rooted in the Gospel and help remind me to repent regularly so I can overcome my weaknesses.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Ryan Porter
No, of course not. Do Catholics worship the Pope? We're Christians, and thus we worship Jesus Christ and God the Father. We do however revere Joseph Smith as the man through whom Jesus Christ restored His church. He was the first prophet of this dispensation. Show more Show less

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

Ryan Porter
While there isn't a dress code for attending church, we usually wear 'Sunday best', which for men is a white shirt and tie, and sometimes a suit, and for women is dresses or skirts. We don't do it to show off or to act pious, but rather to show respect for the Lord and the Sacrament. Holidays are fun! My favorite holidays are Christmas, of course, and Independence Day. We like to celebrate, for ours is a religion of joy and there is much to be joyful about! Mormon culture is full of interesting things, but everyone is different, do we should all feel free to pick and choose the best parts and what works for us. Everyone is welcome to be an individual, and to bring their individual talents and perspectives to the table to share. Show more Show less
