Hi I'm Mathew Whillans

Husband, Brother, Son, Friend, Computer Science Student and oh yeah... I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love to read and watch great TV. I love movies and great monologues. I love computers and technology. I study Computer Science and love every minute of it.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because it has answered every question I have ever had. At several times in my life I have gone through painful things, most self inflicted, and yet as I look back I know that it was at those times that my Heavenly Father was there the most. I recall the time when I found out my older brother was very ill. He had been ill in years previous and it wasn't new to us but things had taken a much more severe turn. The moment I found out I was also told he would be unlikely to last the month. 2 days later he passed away. Those moments were the hardest. Even though I had been taught my whole life about what happens to us after we die in those first few moments, and even times afterwards, I questioned why he had to. Knowing that there is a plan for everyone, that God loves each of us and that the life after this will be better than even the best life we can imagine for ourselves here brought little comfort. Over time though, I realised that I really did know that there is more to our existence than the short time we are here. This wasn't my first encounter with the loss of a loved but this was the first time I really sat and thought about what I had been taught really meant to me. As I came to move past my initial grief I felt the love a Father who mourned with me, that of my Father in heaven. I felt a love of understanding what I was going through and a renewed promise that I might not always understand why everything happens in life but that there is a plan. He really did reach out and touch my life in a very personal moment and strengthened my soul. For that alone I will always know that God lives. That Jesus is the Christ. That not only does he know who I am but he knows how to help me as me not as one of 7 Billion. He doesn't wash my life out with generic answers. When I ask my questions in prayer He answers me in a way only He and I would understand. I know that He answers all prayers where our hearts are willing to accept the answer given.

How I live my faith

At church I help people to find out why knowing God is so important. I know that as I have learned more about Him over the years that it makes me more aware of what I do. It makes me more aware of how important our relationships are. Family, friends and complete strangers are all important to Him and that makes me try harder to show and share the love that he gave me for them. I had the opportunity to spend a part of my life as a full time missionary sharing that with everyone I met. I found that nothing makes people happier than coming to believe and know that not only are they important to Heavenly Father but so are their families, their friends and the people they haven't even met yet.
