Hi I'm Heidi Spiel

I'm from a family of 8 and grew up in Idaho Falls. I'm a missionary serving in Raleigh, North Carolina. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Being from a small town in Idaho, I grew up in a very recreational area. I love to go camping. four-wheeling, hiking, boating, and snowboarding. I love living life and being active doing anything I can! Last semester I was a volunteer English teacher in a small town in Thailand and it was the most amazing experience. I loved learning about a completely different culture and lifestyle. I especially loved the children that I taught and miss them every day. I believe that being around children helps us learn how to be more like our Savior, Jesus Christ. I feel the happiest when I am doing something to help other people. In high school I was a volunteer tutor for a special education class and a second grade class and I also helped as a volunteer at a local domestic violence shelter. I have always had a passion for helping others and learning about other cultures and I have a dream of opening an orphanage in Africa with my dad someday. Through fasting and prayer, I have decided to put my life of dating, traveling, and college on hold to serve an 18-month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am thrilled that I will have the opportunity to share the gospel with the people of North Carolina. It is worth it to me to leave my home and loved ones for so long because I know what joy and comfort the gospel of the church can bring to individuals and families. I look forward to sharing my joy and my testimony of Jesus Christ with others.

Why I am a Mormon

I love being a Mormon. I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church of Christ once again established on this earth. I know that the gospel was restored by the prophet Joseph Smith and that, through divine guidance, Joseph Smith was able to translate the Book of Mormon. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and a great blessing in our day because it teaches about Christ and gives us guidance. I know that Heavenly Father loves us and would not abandon us and because of that I know that, just in times of old, we have a prophet called of God that receives revelation from Him. It is important to have prophets and apostles because they help to guide us in these last days. Jesus Christ is my Savior, my Redeemer, my brother, and my friend. He knows me and knows what I am going through. It is my constant goal in life to become more like Him.

How I live my faith

I have always thought that the best way to live my faith and share my belief about the gospel of Jesus Christ is to get involved in the community and look for opportunities to be a loving friend to those who need it most. In high school I enjoyed being a tutor for a special education class and a volunteer at the local domestic violence shelter where I was able to watch and play with the children while their mothers went to counseling. I have also been blessed to be a participant in four week-long service projects in Tijuana and Puerto Penasco Mexico with my family and friends. The last couple of years of high school I decided to participate in a couple local scholarship pageants that led me to talking in front of many girls about how important it is to love themselves for who they are instead of being hard on themselves if they don't feel like they measure up to the world's standard of beauty. I also want to show my love and devotion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by dedicating the next 18 months of my life teaching others about my religion and bringing others unto Christ. I know that my Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, know me by name and love me perfectly. I enjoy serving others because it allows me to get a glimpse of the great love that Heavenly Father and Christ have for them. Feeling that love is also a great reminder to me of how much the Lord loves me and wants to guide, strengthen, and bless me.

Why do Mormons baptize their new members?

Heidi Spiel
Through the life of Jesus Christ and the example that He set for us, we know that it is essential for each of God's children to be baptized either personally of by proxy. During Christ's earthly ministry, He gave His disciples power and authority to baptize. We refer to this power and authority as the Priesthood. It is, quite literally, the power of God given to man on earth in order to perform sacred ordinances (such as baptism) . This authority was restored back to the earth when the Gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to its fullness through the prophet Joseph Smith. We are baptized by someone who holds the Priesthood to become members of the Church of Jesus Christ, and so that we can be cleansed from our sins. When we are baptized we covenant with God that we are willing to be followers of Christ and keep His commandments all the days of our life. Through faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and enduring to the end, all of Heavenly Father's children can someday enter the kingdom of God. Show more Show less

Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven’t we always had the Bible?

Heidi Spiel
As we read and study the bible, we can see a pattern of apostasy and restoration. God chooses a prophet, the prophet teaches the gospel and leads the people, the people gradually disregard of reject the teachings, priesthood authority is taken from the earth, and then when the time is right God chooses another prophet to guide His people. After the people crucified Christ and rejected the teachings of the apostles, the truth was once again taken from the earth and many different denominations evolved. Heavenly Father knew that he would need to call another prophet and restore His gospel that would lead and guide His children through the last days. That is why, when the conditions were right and freedom of religion existed in America, God saw fit to call His servant Joseph Smith to restore the Gospel of Jesus Christ back to its fullness. Heavenly Father knew that there would be questions concerning Joseph Smith and whether or not he was a prophet called of God, and so he blessed us with the Book of Mormon- another testament of Jesus Christ. The purpose of the Book of Mormon is two-fold. It helps bring us closer to Jesus Christ as we read from it, but it also helps us to know whether or not Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. Everyone is invited to read the Book of Mormon and pray to know whether or not it is a book written by prophets of God. I have read it numerous times and I know that it truly is the word of God and a great companion to the Bible. Show more Show less
