Hi I'm Rick

I joined the Mormon church when I was 16 so I could play on the basketball team.

About Me

I was born and raised in West Virginia. I have 8 children and 2 stepchildren, 5 boys and 5 girls and 8 grandchildren. Add my children's ages together and I have been a parent for over 180 years. No wonder I feel so old sometimes. Family is the purpose of life. Sharing the joy of life together. It is not always easy. Pain, death and sorrow are common facts of life. But sharing with your family will give you the strength to make it through. Physical possessions, I have few. An old car, a nice TV, some furniture, nothing of real earthly value. But children make me rich. Rich in love and laughter, good times and quickly forgotten bad times.

Why I am a Mormon

My sister start dating her now husband and he was a Mormon. They had a basketball team and so I started going to church so I could be on the team. I was 16 and not very good at basketball, but that did not stop me and so I sat on the bench a lot. After about 6 months the missionaries found out I was not a member, so I took the discussion. Soon I was baptized. I decided I wanted to go on a mission. My parents are not members, but they supported me. I was called to the Central California Mission. It was a marvelous experience. I met so many great people and study the gospel diligently. Being a new convert on a mission, my view of missionaries was that they were perfect, they were way up there in righteousness, really close to Jesus. But I was really low on that scale. So I started praying for forgiveness. Missionaries pray a lot, like 50 times a day. So I prayed constantly for forgiveness. One morning our missionary district leaders (DL) were coming over to work with us. I awoke early as usual, but this morning fell back to sleep for 30 minutes. I woke up in a panic because I was late, so I hurried and got ready. During this 30 minute nap, I had a dream. I saw the robed arm of a great man. He was in looking at a large book with hand writing on the open pages. His reached out and turned the page. The new pages were blank. Reaching above the book to quill pen in a bottle of ink, he took the pen and began drawing perfectly straight lines on the blank page. I watched him draw a dozen or so lines marveling at how perfectly straight they were. Then I awoke. When my district leader arrived I told him of my dream. He said the Lord had given him the interpretation of my dream. The hand I saw was the hand of the Lord. The book was my book of life. The Lord had turn a page in my life. Well, I'm slow so I prayed for 6 more months before I realized the meaning of the dream, that the Lord had forgiven me. The new story of my life had begun.

How I live my faith

I have been a college professor for 25 years and I love it. I teach the how computers power business. How to use computers to make better decisions. I have taught thousands of students about the power of computers. But computers are nothing compared to the power of the human body. God created us in His own image and likeness. My studying the scriptures and the inspired words of living prophets and apostles I have come to know God. He is my friend, my confidant, my healer, my redeemer, my savior and king. I love His church. I have served in just about every calling you have in the church, from working in the nursery to serving as stake clerk and most things in between. There is an unspeakable joy that comes from serving in the kingdom of God. Today, I attended a meeting and received a revelation. Nothing to exciting, just the application of a scripture in a way I had never before considered. We were being taught by the Stake President the power and importance of councils in church work. Suddenly, a verse came to mind, Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." The spirit bore witness that Jesus will be in our midst when we council together in building His kingdom upon the earth. I know God lives. He hears and answers our prayers. If we earnestly seek Him, he will find us. In the book of Moroni, in the Book of Mormon, Moroni gives us this inspired promise "... by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." Moroni 10:5. I know this to be true. God has spoken to men, He does now speak to man and He will continue to do so. He has promised He will return again. Now is the time to prepare. Lay your burdens at the feet of Jesus Christ. He will gladly bear them for you. You can take anything to Him and He will lift you up. I so testify in the name of Jesus Christ!

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Rick
"Adam fell that men might be and Men are that they might have joy." (2 Nephi 2:25) The fall of Adam brought spiritual and physical death upon all mankind. The atonement of Jesus Christ paid the price, the demands of justice, so we will overcomes these deaths if we choose. The Savior's in his agony in the Garden of Gethsemane took upon Himself, the pain, suffering and agony of all mankind. This suffering allowed His mercy to satisfy justice. On the cross He died and because He is the Son of God, he was able to lay aside His mortal body and take it up again after 3 days. Thus, He overcame, spiritual and physical deaths. Spiritual death is the separation of man from God. When Adam fell, he died spiritually as he was cast out of the Garden of Eden and from Heavenly Fathers presence. We all suffer this fate. Physical death came into the world as Adam could to long partake of the Tree of Life found in the Garden. The Savior, Jesus Christ, in His atoning sacrifice allows us to be born again spiritually when we come to Him with a broken heart and contrite spirit. By entering into promises with Him and receiving the ordnance of baptism, we are washed clean of our sins and reborn spiritually. My His power to overcome death, Jesus became the first to be resurrected. The first to have his spirit reenter His mortal body and be whole again. His resurrection is a free gift to us all. All men will be resurrected in and by the power of Jesus Christ's Atonement. I know this is TRUE Show more Show less
