Hi I'm Perla Hernandez

I'm Mexican American. I love the performing arts and music. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a Texan native but currently living in Arizona and I love it. I have a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Texas at Austin. I enjoy being able to help others eliminate barriers to be able to reach independence through my work and volunteering in the community. I love the performing arts, dancing, and music.

Why I am a Mormon

My family always emphasized the importance of spending time together as much as possible and creating your own home centered on values and standards. I did not grow up in an LDS family, but my mother provided a Christ centered home. I grew up as a Catholic but I always felt there was something missing. I accompanied friends to their churches and investigated different denominations but I was not able to find that missing piece. I didn’t even know what that missing piece was. I just knew that the truth was not found there. I had been living in Austin, TX for almost 6 years when I was given a job offer in a small town outside of Corpus Christi, TX as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. My heart was telling me that I needed to move and so I did. Three days after I moved, I visited a friend and she was having a lesson with the missionaries. The missionaries shared some scriptures from the Book of Mormon and I got extremely confused. I felt this way because the Book of Mormon sounded really familiar, but I had never read it. The whole lesson I was trying to figure out where I had read it so I agreed to read the assigned chapter and meet again. I figured what do I have to lose in reading just a chapter. Well my whole life changed! Before I knew it, I had read the whole Book of Mormon in a month and was so ready to be baptized on March 24 2012. I found the missing piece, happiness, and love I had longed for so long. The gospel has taught me so much about myself and my divine worth. I have developed deep personal relationship with my Heavenly Father and He has guided me to where I need to be and who I need to become. I know that as I continue to exercise and increase my faith in all phases of life, I will be in tune with the Spirit, stand as a true follower of Christ, and most importantly be the light to those who need Him just like I did.

How I live my faith

The Book of Mormon has helped me to purify my heart and always come unto the Lord. There have been many challenges and trials through my journey of faith, but I have not and will not let obstacles obscure me and my divine purpose. President Eeyring stated “those that who are faithful to God are protected and prospered. That comes as a result of serving God and keeping His commandments.” As I have come to personally know the Savior and grow in the gospel and church callings, I can certainly appreciate the small things in life and most importantly the source of those blessings and happiness—my Savior.
