Hi I'm Michael King

A fifth generation Mormon. Born in Utah, lived in South Carolina for thirteen years and now consider Maryland home.

About Me

Pamela and I have five daughters. Since retiring from the practice of architecture I have taken up landscape painting. Our daughters live all across the country and my great pleasure is traveling to visit them; stopping to paint along the way. It a great life and I savor every minute.

Why I am a Mormon

A couple years ago I was flying to California. I had a window seat and, being a full flight, a young man sat next to me in the middle seat. He was a devoted Hindu, committed to his family and lived his beliefs every day. Toward the end of the flight he confided to me, "But, what if it isn't true?", referring to Hindu teachings. We exchanged email addresses and corresponded several times in the weeks that followed. But, I have lost touch with him. I have often considered his heartfelt comment in my own life. As I search my heart I have come to the realization that I have been blessed with an assurance and conviction of the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ for my entire life. My great grandfather's father was converted to the church in 1863. I am an heir to that heritage. Since my baptism in 1956 I have been prompted (when I would listen) by the Holy Ghost. And, while I have studied philosophy and explored diversities of religious thought, I have never doubted. In my maturity I realize that I have learned "...here a little and there a little..." (Isaiah 28:10) and continue to be strengthened if the faith. What a peace this has brought to my soul! There is such terrible distress in the world. I am convinced that there is no other way to turn the misery and appointments of life into joy and happiness than through faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ. And through the Holy Ghost we can obtain a confidence in His atoning sacrifice in our own lives. Our Heavenly Father loves us and has, in these latter-days, called prophets to teach us as he did in days of old. My hope is that everyone including my friend on the airplane, will find rest in the and assurance of the truth as I have.

How I live my faith

I served a mission in the Philippines in 1967- 69. It was a great experience and I have been fortunate to continue doing missionary service through the course of my life. Currently, I coordinate the efforts of our part and full time missionaries in our congregation. Of late I have had the opportunity to assist families in crisis in our area. I work in a program called Neighbor-to-Neighbor sponsored by an Episcopal congregation. The program endeavors to teach life skills to selected families subsidizing their rent payments while in the program. I am very pleased that our local leaders are encouraging greater participation is our communities.
