Do you want to chat with a missionary?

We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Hi I'm Rob DeBry

I'm a jazz trombonist, I live in London and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I love my family. Nothing in this world is nearly as important to me as my family is. I love my parents. I am a momma's boy. My mom Eydie taught me to love music, she gave me my first piano lessons, and now I study music at uni, I'm completely obessed with music. My best friends in this world are my brothers. My older brother and I are twins. We were born on June 19th. Except he's four years older than me. I love spending time with him, and my little brothers Cubby and Sam. We like to go out and see movies and play games and jam. I'm currently serving a mission in England. And there is no where I would rather be. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the one true church on the earth today, if I didn't it would be very hard to convince me to leave my family for two years to talk about it.

Why I am a Mormon

I have seen the influences of my family. I have seen hundreds and thousands of families and homes of families that don't have the gospel, or the standards, and promises that are contained in it, and I can see very clearly the difference in happiness between living the gospel and rejecting it. The more I learn, and the more I experience it becomes a more and more obvious choice to follow the saviour and his teachings as expressed in his restored church.

How I live my faith

I love to share my beliefs with people. This gospel has brought me TONS of happiness in my life, and I want to share that with everyone I meet. I live my faith by trying to be a happy person. I'm trying to be like Jesus! I feel like the closer I get to Christ the happier I can be. Right now my entire life IS my faith, I spend all day every single day talking to as many people in Elgland as I possibly can trying to help them come to understand the beauty and the simplicity and the truth of the restored gospel.

Do Mormons practice polygamy?

Rob DeBry
No. Show more Show less

What is the role of the husband and the wife in the family?

Rob DeBry
The very first commandment given to Adam and Eve was to "multiply and replenish the earth". That commandment remains today just as well as it did then. Man and Woman have been endowed with the sacred powers of creation and been charged with the responsibility to raise their children in righteousness. The husband has a responsibility to care for, and provide for his children. The wife has the sacred duty to raise and nurture her children. Both have an obligation to be loyal to one another and to love and protect one another. Marriage in the temple is an eternal ordinance. It is extremely important. The one we choose to marry will be our eternal companion in this life as well as in the life to come. When we follow the lord's direction and laws in his order of marriage, we will have an eternal increase in our joy as husband and wife. Show more Show less

How do I become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church)?

Rob DeBry
As you learn about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and you read and sincerely pray about the Book of Mormon, you will come to know that it is true. You will want to participate in ordinances, such as baptism. But this doesn't need to be done alone, the church currently has over 60,000 full time missionaries (90,000 by the end of 2013) whose purpose it is to help others come closer to Christ. Invite the missionaries to your home and take part in discussions where they will teach about the truths of the gospel and outline in more detail what is required to become a member of the church. Who is the Mormon prophet today?

Rob DeBry
The current president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is Thomas S. Monson. He and his counselors Henry B. Eyring and Dieter F. Uctdorf make up the first presidency of the church. The first presidency as well as the quorum of the twelve apostles (Boyd K. Packer, L. Tom Perry ,Russell M. Nelson, Dallin H. Oaks, M. Russell Ballard, Richard G. Scott, Robert D. Hales, Jeffrey R. Holland, David A. Bednar, Quentin L. Cook, D. Todd Christofferson, and Neil L. Andersen) are all sustained as prophets and apostles. Show more Show less

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Rob DeBry
The LDS Church has been established all over the world. We recognise that everyone is a child of God, and that we are all family, making our worship services very welcoming to anyone anywhere in the world. All the services in the church are provided by ward members as volunteers, and so we don't pass a plate for donations, or have paid ministers or speakers. We partake of the sacrament in our mail worship service. Then there are two hours of study classes, A combined sunday school for each age group, A primary meeting for children and a nursery for younger children. There are young womens classes and relief society for women and priesthood meetings for men as well. Show more Show less

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

Rob DeBry
I LOVE the bible. And yes, Mormons do regard it as the word of God. But as stated in the articles of faith written by Joseph Smith, we believe it to be the word of God AS FAR as it is translated correctly. And sometimes it can be difficult to interpret the bible correctly. And that's where the need for the Book of Mormon arises. You see so many churches that interpret the bible differently, but when you focus on it through the lens of the Book of Mormon, and you study them as companions, then it becomes very clear. What is faith?

Rob DeBry
Faith is both a spiritual and temporal principle of action and power. Faith is to hope for things that you can't see, but that are true. Faith is the first principle of the Gospel. We don't make an effort to do anything until we first believe in what we're doing. I don't practice my trombone, or write music without first believing that even if I sound bad now, I will improve. So through our faith, or our hope that God is there and what we do is his will, we are drawn to do an action. And through that action we gain power. Show more Show less

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

Rob DeBry
It is a sensitive topic in today's world, but one that requires a plain and bold answer. Homosexual behavior is a sinful act. There are those that unite their identity with being gay or lesbian, and deny themselves the wonderful gift of agency that god has given to all men; However, everyone ALWAYS has a choice. We understand that we all have our crosses to bear, our trials to pass through in this life. We don't judge others for their trials or inclinations, yet we don't appease or condone sinful acts. The atonement of Jesus Christ is for all mankind and it is a strengthening power. I can promise, that even though inclinations can be tough to curb, if you find strength in Jesus Christ and press forward in faith, more blessings and happiness than you can imagine will be yours. What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Rob DeBry
In a trail, or a court case, a lawyer will call witnesses to the stand to ask them questions to try to figure out the "whole story" or what really happened. A testimony is very much like a testimony in court. It is a special witness of what we know or believe to be true based on our spiritual and temporal experiences. Show more Show less

What are some things that tell you there is a God?

Rob DeBry
There is SO much evidence that there is a God. I don't think that this universe is just a happy accident. Look at everything that is, all the beauty in this world. There is no way there is not a God. The mere function of the human eye would be enough to prove to me that there is a God. The best physical evidence that you can have is the book of mormon. It is true. And if you read the book of mormon, and the story of joseph smith you'll realise that it is impossible for that book to exist without the hand of God leading it forht to this time. It is a volume that has been prepared to come forward as a testimony that God exists and that he still speaks with his prophets and performs miracles. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Rob DeBry
No. But it's awesome. And it's the best thing ever. All young men have been called, or asked, to serve a mission if they are able, but it isn't a requirement. My reason for serving a mission was simply because I love this gospel. It IS true! And when something brings you as much peace and happiness, protection, strength, guidance, friendship, and love as this gospel has to me, the only logical choice is to share it with other people. I want to help to invite people to come unto christ. Show more Show less

How can we increase our faith in Jesus Christ?

Rob DeBry
As I've been teaching other people the gospel in England, I've heard so many people say "I just don't have faith". It is SO important to remember that faith isn't only a spiritual principle. It is temporal as well. Everyone has excersized faith before. Whether in God or themselves or something someone else told them, everyone has found faith in something. Turning your heart to Christ and gaining faith in him begins with a hope that it might be true. That hope will increase your happiness. It'll fill you. and you'll want to know more, and through study and trust in Christ, you'll want to be more like him. Faith will move you to action, and action will always increase your faith as long as your stepping in the right direction. That faith to follow a commandment, even though you may not completely understand why it was given, will lead you to greater knowledge, peace, happiness, and faith than you ever thought possible. Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

Rob DeBry
The word cult has negative connotation and is used to try and attack, or more discredit the church. The LDS church contains all the truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After Christ was crucified and his apostles were killed the gospel spread widely around the world and was even adopted my the roman empire, but the authority of God had been lost with the apostles. The church of Christ began to splinter and split, and many religions were trying to "reform" the church and split from it to try to practice additional truths in the bible that had been lost; However, a mere reformation wouldn't restore all the keys of the preisthood that were neccesarry. Many people don't understand that we are in fact the restored church of Jesus Christ in these Latter-Days (hence the name of our church). Because of this misunderstanding people see it as "unorthadox" And call it a cult. But it's not. It is THE truth. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

Rob DeBry
Baptism is an ordinance that has been performed since man was formed. It is a saving ordinance, meaning that it is required for our salvation. But there have been many on the earth that have not had the opperitunity to accept or even reject baptism. In temples all over the world we perform proxy baptisms, where someone who is living is baptised in behalf of one who is dead. The deceased person then has that opperitunity to accept or reject the covenant of baptism. The church keeps records of the names of those who have had proxy work performed for them as to not duplicate the ordinance. The names of those baptised for the dead are not added to the membership of the church. Show more Show less

Why is family so important to Mormons?

Rob DeBry
Family is the basic unit of organisation in the church and in society. The impact of the sanctity of family on society can not be measured. I love my family so much, heaven couldn't possibly be heaven without being with the people that matter most to me. Our gaol in this life is to find happiness and to become like our Heavenly Father, and the greatest joy one can experience in the eternities is to have a family. Show more Show less

Who are the Mormons?

Rob DeBry
The "Mormons" are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is a worldwide church that originated in the United States in the early 1800's. The church is not a "reformed" religion. It is a restored and revealed religion, meaning that the truths and the authority that existed in the church that Christ established in his earthly ministry have been restored through a living prophet called of God. We believe that Christ continues to reveal truths to us today. Show more Show less

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Rob DeBry
We all sin. We all HAVE sinned before in the past. And our goal is to return to live with our Heavenly Father. The issue is we're imperfect. There is no way, because no unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God. But Heavenly Father knew we would make mistakes, so he sent his Son. Jesus Christ was to live a sinless life. He met the requirement to make it back to live with Heavenly Father. He was baptised to fulfil all righteousness, and to be an example of what we need to do to follow him. His last act on earth was the atonement. It opens the gate that allows us to return to our Heavenly Father. Atonement means to make amends. To make things right. And in order to do that, he had to pay the price for all of our sins. He was pressed with the weight of all of our guilt, pain, sorrow, adversity, and affliction. He has felt everything that we'll go through, and through that atonement we can make it back to live with our Father in heaven. Show more Show less

How are the activities of the Mormon missionaries funded?

Rob DeBry
The missionaries pay for their missions by their own funds. They live for two years on the money that they have saved up. It is a big sacrifice. On my mission I've had people tell me I was completely mad for doing what I am doing, but I KNOW that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day-Saints is true. And I need to share that knowledge with everyone I possibly can! Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Rob DeBry
We really really stress the importance of family. We know that hvaing a family, and being a part of an eternal family, is what will bring us the greatest joy in this life. Everything that we're asked to do, and every choice we make helps us to be with our families forever. Mormons are people. For the most part our lives are very similar to everyone else's life. But we have the knowledge of who we are, where we came from, and what will happen to us and our families after we die. The truth of the gospel brings us joy peace and happiness, and we try to share that wherever possible. Show more Show less

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

Rob DeBry
Our Heavenly Father loves us. A lot. And he IS there. The best way to improve your relationship with Him is by communicating with him! Pray to him. Prayer is a two way communication with our Father in Heaven; We can speak directly to him. The words in the scriptures are the words of God, so reading helps improve that relationship as well. As you come to know him and show your love to him you will know he is there. He has promised us that as we come closer to him, he will meet us half-way. Show more Show less

Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

Rob DeBry
Heavenly Father is a God of order. You need his authority, or permission, to seal something on earth as well as in heaven. What if an ice-cream truck tried to pull you over and give you a ticket? I probably would recognise his lack of authority, and not pull over. But if a police officer pulled you over, well he has the authority to do that. That authority is nessecarry for our covenants to be recognised and sealed in heaven. That authority was restored to Joseph Smith in 1829. Show more Show less

Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

Rob DeBry
Members of the church are encouraged to be active in their communities. It is very important to be informed and to have your voice heard; However, the church doesn't endorse one partiular political party, platform or canidate. Members of the church have their own particular political beliefs. Show more Show less

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Rob DeBry
YES!!! That's the best part! The epitome of happiness and joy that we can attain in this life, and throughout the eternities is to be sealed as an eternal family. To progress as husband and wife together is so important. It is the only means by which we can enter into the celestial kingdom and become like God. Our families, when they are sealed in the temple, will be sealed for time and all eternity. Show more Show less

Why don’t Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church’s law of health and proper diet?

Rob DeBry
Our health law is called the "word of wisdom". It prohibits the use of Tobacco, Alcohol, Coffee, tea, and illegal drugs. For me it is a means of protection. At first glance it can seem like its very restrictive, that mormons have "loads of rules and can't have fun" but its actually the opposite. These "rules" keep us safe. I know that my body is healthy, and can and will run at peak efficiency. I am not a slave to addiction. I CAN have a lot of fun, and the best part is I will remember it the next morning! But God does give us rules and regulations because he loves us. These our not our bodies, they are gifts from God, and one day we will be accountable to him for how we used them. Show more Show less

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

Rob DeBry
When we go to church we dress up in our best clothes, men will wear a suit and tie and the women wear modest dresses and skirts and the like. We do that to show respect for the lord. We celebrate Christmas, Easter, other national holidays, Birthdays, anniversaries, and so forth. Show more Show less

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

Rob DeBry
Modesty and chastity are very closely related. For me it has a lot to do with what thought has to do with action. Modesty shows respect for the gift that your body is, and that message emminates to all who see you. It lets other people know how we feel about ourselves. When we are immodest it shows a degree of disrespect towards God and ourselves. It will attract people who also don't respect the fact that our bodies are gifts from God. In the same way that our thoughts affect what we do, our modesty has a large influence on our ability and our willingness to remain chaste. Heavenly Father has asked us to keep our bodies pure and to abstain from sexual sin because he knows that the guilt that follows will destroy families. Parents can help their children to stay safe by teaching them, and helping them understand that not only people, but the Holy Ghost will respect you more if you are modest. If your dress, language, and behavior is in line with the "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlet, the Holy Ghost will be your constant companion. Many times what the Lord asks of us isn't apparently popular, but the joy and solace that the Holy Ghost brings into our lives far out weighs any joy a "Social norm" could ever possibly provide. Show more Show less

Why is it important for us to take care of our bodies? Why are our bodies called temples of God in the Bible?

Rob DeBry
Our soul is a composition of body (mortal) and spirit (immortal). One of the functions God's Plan of Happiness was that our unembodied spirits could obtain a body. Our bodies are gifts from our Heavenly Father. For me, the most basic of God's gifts to me is my agency (or my ability to choose) and my body. When it's time to return to live with our Heavenly Father we will stand accountable to him for what we chose to do with our bodies, so it is very important that we keep our bodies clean and use them under the direction that God has given us. The bible calls our bodies temples because they can be houses for the Holy Spirit. When our bodies are clean and pure like a temple we are able to have that spirit with us all the time. But if a temple was defiled, the spirit can't dwell there. We are asked to live the word of wisdom to protect our bodies. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about “eternal life?”

Rob DeBry
Eternal life is different than immortality. Immortality is a gift given to all men through the atonement of Jesus Christ. We will all be ressurected. But eternal life is living with God. It is dwelling with him in the Celestial Kingdom. To me it's the difference between merely surviving and living. Just as I want to live my mortal life to its fullest potential, I want to live my eternal life to its fullest potential, and shoot for that "Eternal Life" instead of merely continuing on forever. In whom should we have faith?

What is the Book of Mormon?

Rob DeBry
The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. It is record much like the bible that contains the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a history of a family that left Jerusalem 600 years before the birth of Christ, and moved to the American continent. There they developed into two great civilizations, the Nephites and the Lamanites. The pinacle of the Book of Mormon is when Jesus Christ appears to them after his death and ressurection. He teaches them and performs miracles in the americas and establishes his church. These people are those that Christ mentioned when he said "other sheep I have thet are not of this fold, them also must I bring." The Prophet-Historian that compiled the Book of Mormon leaves us with a promise that if we read and pray about the book and the message it contains that we will recieve a conformation of its truth by the power of the holy ghost. Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

Rob DeBry
The temple is an amazing place. It is a place where we can learn how to come closer to our heavenly father, and make more promises to come closer to him, such as marriages that don't end in "until death do you part". And we are able to help people who have died have an opperitunity to accept or reject ordinances such as baptism, by proxy. Because of the sacred nature of the temple, there is a high standard of worthiness to enter into the temple. How is the Book of Mormon different from the Bible? How did Joseph Smith obtain the “golden plates” or Book of Mormon?

Rob DeBry
The Book of Mormon is another ancient record that testifies of the divinity of Jesus Christ. It was written by those prophets that lived anciently on the american continent. These records were passed down from generation to generation and contained a history of the civilization that lived there, as well as the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The record eventually came to a Prophet-Historian named Mormon. He compiled and abridged the record then gave it to his son, who added his own witness that the record was true and encouraged all who would read it to ponder it and pray about it, and then burried it in the ground to protect it. That same prophet, Moroni, appeared to Joseph Smith in the 1800's and led him to the place where he burried it. He then translated it by divine inspiration, and it was printed as The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. This is the way that I came to know Jesus Christ as my savior and redeemer. I know that all that take Moroni's challenge in all sincerity will recieve a divine witness that the Book of Mormon is true, by the power of the Holy Ghost. Show more Show less
