Hi I'm Courtlandt Spear

I'm studying Chemical Engineering and Mathematics. I love lifting weights and relish a good story. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am currently on a mission in Madagascar. When I am not a missionary, I am a student at BYU and studying Chemical Engineering and minoring in Mathematics. I choose my major because I have always been enamored by the universe and all of its beauty and complexity. I want to study what makes the universe tick and apply it for the good of mankind. I love eating healthy food, weight training, and being social with all of the wonderful people at college. I also enjoy a good story in the form of movies, books, and television shows.

Why I am a Mormon

I was born into the Church and knew that it was true at a young age. However, as I grew older I struggled to live in harmony with the principles of the gospel and found myself vastly unhappy. I began to be more anxiously engaged in learning about the gospel as I sought for greater joy and peace in my life. In time I gained a greater testimony and understanding about what the gospel was really about; I began to rely on my Savior to teach me how to be more like him and to help me keep his commandments. He truly has taught me and continues to teach me how to be more like Him. Through these miracles of learning in my life, I have found true joy in living in harmony with the Gospel. The joy and peace that the gospel has brought me is why I'm a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I live my faith on a day to day basis by relying on my belief in Christ and his Atonement as I constantly strive to be more like my Father in Heaven through taking the sacrament (making and keeping covenants) and repenting (changing). I also attend church every week and seek to learn more about my savior. I am also serving a mission in the Madagascar Antananarivo Mission.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Courtlandt Spear
As spirit children in the premortal existence with our Heavenly Father, we did not yet have the skills or abilities to be like our Heavenly Father. We learn in Moses 1:39 that our Father in Heaven wants us to be like Him. This is so we can have a fullness of joy. In order for us to learn how to be like our Father in Heaven, we needed to come to earth and have this mortal experience. In the process of our mortal experience, injustices are caused and we sin. God is perfectly just; he could not allow such injustices to go unresolved and for sins to go unpaid for. He made a plan to atone, or pay, for these sins and resolve the injustices caused in our mortal experience. We could not make these payments, only an infinite and eternal sacrifice made by His only perfect son, Jesus Christ, could pay the debt. Jesus Christ atoned and died for us so that we could have to opportunity to become like our Father in Heaven and experience a fullness of joy. Show more Show less
