Hi I'm Alex

I grew up in six states across the USA. I'm an air force brat, a first year college student, and a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a first year student at the University of Georgia. I intend to major in psychology. I have no idea what I'd do with a psychology degree, but the subject interests me and hopefully I'll figure it out before I graduate. I like writing. I've almost finished my first novel, an urban fantasy/adventure story, and I've written a couple of as yet unpublished short stories. It always bothers me how fantasy and science fiction writers tend to ignore the implications their worlds would have for existing religions, and so I'd like to explore those questions in my work. I'm taking a class in theater appreciation this semester as well, and I'll probably take a few more later in my time at university. I was never all that in to theater until one day in high school when a friend dragged me kicking and screaming to try out for our drama club's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. I got the part of Oberon, and have been interested in theater ever since.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because I know that the doctrine that the Lord has revealed to His prophets it true. I want to follow His teachings, and feel the peace that is gospel brings. I know that God wants me to be a part of this church, and I know that through prayer, scripture study and deep thought, you can come to know what direction He wants you to take. Then, do it. His will really does bring greater peace and understanding than anything else. I know that Jesus Christ died for me, that He took all of my sufferings and sins upon him, and anything I can do to repay Him is an honor. So to sum it up, I am a member of this church because I want to know the truths that God has revealed, because I have felt the Spirit tell me that this is where I'm supposed to be, and because by obeying that revelation I can show my gratitude to Jesus Christ for his loving sacrifice.

How I live my faith

When I got back from my mission, my branch president asked me to be the branch's "Facilities Management Coordinator." When I had trouble pronouncing the calling to my stake president later, he dubbed me the branch's "building guy." Basically, that means that it's my responsibility to gather a group of members from the congregation to clean our church building every other Saturday, so it can be clean and organized for church on Sunday. Although this calling sounds like more of a temporal thing, I've seen spiritual blessings in my life as well. Paying attention to the details of keeping the building clean reminds me of the level of scrutiny I need to use to keep my life clean as I strive to follow the Savior's teachings. It can be challenging at times to keep the building-and my life-ready for inspection, but I want the Lord to be able to look at the work I've done with approval.
