Hi I'm Steve Markham

I'm a father, grandfather, former foster father, divorced, yet now remarried, and dentist turned teacher. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in the Bay area of California. At the age of 8 I moved to Michigan where I graduated from high school. I went to Brigham Young University (BYU) with a 2 year break for a mission to Austria where I was able to serve the people throughout the eastern part of the country. I returned to finish my BA in Secondary Education Mathematics and a German minor, along with pre-dental education. I was married and had 2 children while attending BYU. I went on to University of Nebraska to earn my DDS. I was blessed with a 3rd daughter while attending dental school. I practiced dentistry for 14 years in New Mexico and was the president of the regional dental society and the state Academy of General Dentistry. I had another child with my first wife, was then divorced, remarried, took on 2 other children and had another child with my present wife. I then practiced dentistry overseas in China and was a lecturer at the International Asian Dental meeting for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders. My children attended international schools where I was reintroduced to teaching. My patient was a principal at an international school and asked if I could help them out by teaching some science classes for a teacher who needed to fly back to the states for an operation. I agreed and loved teaching. After watching a show about a person who gave up their career to become a teacher while then making a big difference in the lives of children. I decided to change my career and become a teacher.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I am far from perfect, I try to be fair to every human being. Everyone is on the earth for a purpose. I have been able to find good in every person I have met. The teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ show us how we should behave. I don't know many people who have achieved this level of perfection. I am the great-great grandchild of one of the bodyguards to Joseph Smith, the first prophet of this dispensation. He defended him, gave him one of his homes, and was one of the last to see him on the day of his martyrdom. I have his same faith in this, the gospel of Jesus Christ. I hope all have the chance to just taste of the life-giving love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith was able to bring back the same organization that existed in the previous church established by Jesus Christ, after seeing both the Father and the Son in a sacred grove near his home in Palmyra, NY. This was just after reading in James 1:5 that if we lack wisdom we should ask God with all our faith and we will receive an answer. I admonish you to do the same. Ask whether my words ring true. If so, talk to a missionary like I was at the age of 19 and ask to know more. You'll be glad you did.

How I live my faith

I have spent 10 years as a primary teacher for 8 to 12 year old children. I was a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and completed my Woodbadge leadership training, finishing my "ticket" and earning my distinguished beads. I was a leader of youth aged 12 to 18 for 10 years. I was a member of 12 men in a council with the leaders over 10 church congregations. In China, I was also a leader over youth aged 12 to 18 and a primary teacher for 9 and 10 year olds. Although I spoke very little Dutch, in Rotterdam I was the leader over the quorum of men in the Dutch congregation. As a family, we decided to attend the English speaking congregation where I am currently the primary teacher for the 11 and 12 year olds. While living in New Mexico, I attended the temple once or twice a month and packed our 12 seater van to go to the temple in Juarez, Mexico and Albuquerque to make and renew commitments to God. While in China, I was only able to attend the temple 3 to 4 times per year in Hong Kong and Seoul, Korea. I longed for the opportunity to attend the temple more frequently. Since arriving in the Netherlands I have been able to attend the temple more frequently. I have participated in both English and Dutch speaking sessions.
