Hi I'm Matt Shafer

Born and raised in NC. I love spending time with people, playing basketball, and listening to music. I'm a Mormon and I love it!

About Me

I was born and raised in North Carolina! I'm from the city of Winston-Salem. My main interests are in music and spending time with my friends, family, and all those I'm close to. I also love playing all sorts of sports, especially basketball, ultimate frisbee, and dodge ball. I love listening to all genres of music, but my all time favorite kind is A Cappella! I'm an all-time BYU Vocal Point fan! I play the alto sax and guitar. I served as a drum major for two years of my high school career and enjoyed every minute of marching band. I can think of almost nothing better to do then spend time with family or my close friends. I would rather have fun and be silly with those I love than be stuck alone. Serving my friends and family is where I have the most joy and have the most fun! I attended college for a semester at BYU, and then put it on hold for two years to serve my Heavenly Father as a missionary in the California Fresno Mission!! I'm grateful for that blessing to serve! It's a great day to be a missionary!

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have learned for myself how important the gospel is for me. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is Heavenly Father's kingdom re-established upon the earth and contains the fullness of the everlasting gospel. I know that my Heavenly Father lives and loves everyone, and that love is powerful and never ending. I know that Jesus Christ lives and that he laid down his life for each of us to be able to return to live with our Heavenly Father again. I know that we are blessed with a true prophet who receives guidance directly from God for us in this day and age. I know that the family is the most important institution in the world, and I cannot wait until I have my own children and raise them up with the gospel. It's because of Jesus Christ's atonement that we can all repent and become clean so that we may return into the presence of our Father. Heavenly Father wants each of us to become the best person that we can be and reach our potential. He does hear each of our prayers. Even though our answers may not come immediately or the way we would like them to, He does answer. He has a plan for each of us. I know that I am here for a reason and that the Lord is always there for me. With God all things are possible. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct they paths" - Proverbs 3:3-5

How I live my faith

Being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints isn't just being a part of a religion. It's a way of life. And that way is following the example of Jesus Christ. Trying to follow that example has changed my life and my perspective. It's helped me see that I am a child, a son, of God and that's the way I should carry myself and act. Of course, I'm not perfect, that wasn't how I used to see it, and I've had some very difficult trials in my past, but now I'm focused on studying my scriptures, making my prayers more meaningful, and changing my attitude to be more like the Savior's. At this point in my life, I am more positive than I have ever been and I love who I am. I'm trying to find out more about myself and live up to my potential. I have participated and had the privilege of serving in many different callings in the wards I've lived in. I have been in councils, committees, and in other groups where I was able to serve other people. For example, I served as a Co-Chair over all the youth in my general area planning fun, worth while events, dances, and activities for them to attend. One of my favorite callings was being a home teacher. I simply was encouraged to visit certain people within our congregation at least once a month and share a message that will strengthen and uplift them. I truly grew to love those that I home taught and made sure to always be available to help them. I live this way because I love my Savior. I live because I love others.

What do Mormons believe about family?

Matt Shafer
We know that the family is ordained of God and the fundamental unit of society. Heavenly Father wants us to be together as a family, not only just in this life, but into the eternities. A family founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ will have the most love, peace, and joy within the walls of their home. God is our literal father in Heaven and he loves us more than we even comprehend. If he loves us, His children, so much, than He truly holds the family unit with a special love and wants us to be a family. Thanks to our prophets today, we know as a truth that we can be with our families forever as we follow Jesus Christ's example and through the sacred ordinances preformed in the temple. I'm so grateful for that knowledge that I am sealed to my family and, even when they may pass away and leave this life, I know that I will see them again. Show more Show less

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is their Savior. Why do we need a Savior?

Matt Shafer
We are human and we, unfortunately, make mistakes and sin. We know that "no unclean thing can dwell in the presence of God." God is a loving Heavenly Father who wants us to return to live in his presence. In order to live in his presence we must follow all the commandments and do all that God asks us to do. As stated before, we make mistakes and sin. In order to overcome sin we need a personal Savior. Jesus Christ preformed the Atonement for us and is our personal Savior. He suffered in Gethsemane, died on the cross, and was resurrected. Because Christ was resurrected, we will all be resurrected and have a perfect body. He took upon himself the sins of the world, which means that all those who believe in His name, repent, and keep all of His commandments can and will feel the cleansing power of the Atonement. He will take your sins upon Him, and you can become clean so you can again enter into God's presence. Because of the Savior Jesus Christ, you can repent of your sins and feel guilt and pain swept away now. Having a Savior is central to Heavenly Father's plan for us so we can return to live with Him again. Show more Show less
