Hi I'm Derek Steele

Engineering student at BYU. Film/Photography enthusiast. Love to run. Son of God. I am a Mormon!

About Me

Growing up, I always wanted to be an astronaut because I wanted to see the world the way that God sees it. I have always been interested in seeing the world from different perspectives. That is why I love photography/video because it allows me to take a step back and look at the world on a grand scale, as well as the smallest scale. I love being outdoors and being active. I could never sit still as a child. I always had to be moving! Music is the best! I feel that the great movie of life that we're all apart of is more entertaining when there is background music! Currently I am serving as a missionary in the Iowa Des Moines mission Spanish speaking. Serving a mission was the best choice I ever made!

Why I am a Mormon

As a child, I spent a lot of time looking up. Some of my earliest memories include looking at the moon and stars through an old telescope. I have always been amazed with how big this world really is and I grew up wondering what part do I play in this enormous universe. As I got older, I began to discover just what my role was as I learned more and more about the teachings of Jesus Christ. Little by little, my understanding of life began to take shape as I prayed, read scriptures, and attended church. As I got older and made mistakes I had to learn to rely more and more on Jesus Christ to guide me. I began to develop a more personal relationship with my Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ. As I put my trust in the Savior's teachings I learned my purpose in life. I came to know for myself that Jesus Christ lives and that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is our Heavenly Father's plan of happiness for us all. I know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ was restored on the earth through the prophet Joseph Smith. I know that the Book of Mormon contains the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it completes the story that is told in the Bible. This testimony that I have of the restored gospel is the reason I am a Mormon. I am a Mormon because being Mormon allows me to know without a doubt what my purpose in life is. I don't have to wonder anymore, and that alone is more valuable to me than anything else.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by putting it into action! If I learned anything from the scriptures it is that the Lord expects us to act. The Savior set the perfect example by dedicating His life to serving others. He was not concerned with His own life, rather his life was completely focused on others around Him. In fact, the ultimate act of love and service was His Atoning sacrifice in Gethsemane and on Calvary. Because He set the example of service, I try to do the same. Currently I am serving as a missionary in Des Moines, Iowa. It has been the best two years of my life and I have learned for myself the principle that the Savior taught, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it." As I have "lost" my life in the service of others I can testify with all those who serve others that I have "found" my life--through service, and that is how I choose to live my faith. Each of us can look around and follow the counsel given in the scriptures to "succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.” (D&C 81:5.).

What is the Book of Mormon?

Derek Steele
The Book of Mormon is a set of religious scripture comparable to the bible that is of great importance to the LDS faith. The Book of Mormon is the "keystone" to our religion. It is "another testimony of Jesus Christ." It is a book that explains the nature of Jesus Christ and contains a history of His works here on the earth. Through reading this book we all can come to know more about the nature of Christ and His role as our Savior and Redeemer. As we read the book with faith in Christ, we can pray and ask to know if it is true. The book promises that if you ask God, our Father in Heaven, having faith in His son, Jesus Christ, if the book is true, we will come to the knowledge that it is true. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Derek Steele
Are we saved by grace? YES! Without the grace of our Savior Jesus Christ we would have no chance of returning to live with our Heavenly Father and there would be no point of even trying! "All men fall short of the glory of God." BUT, because we are saved by grace, this does not eliminate our works. But, we do not do works because we believe we are earning points or tally marks on the scoreboard of our salvation, but we do works because we love God and our Savior Jesus Christ! Christ himself said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." Furthermore, Nephi, one of the Book of Mormon prophets, taught that Christ asked us to follow him and added "can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the commandments of the Father?" (2 Nephi 31:10) It is through grace we are saved, and it is through our works and our faith together that we progress day by day, grow line upon line and precept upon precept until that day when Christ will come, and when He comes, we will find ourselves like him because we will become even as he is as we do what he has asked us to do.
