Hi I'm Douglas Benson

I grew up in a military (Navy) family as the oldest of three kids. I'm a mormon.

About Me

I grew up on a moving van as a son of a US Navel officer. Eventually I would settle down as a CPA in eastern Idaho. I am married and have four children who love to try my patience but who I wouldn't trade for anything. I am an active learner and love reading and trying to become a better person. I have high expectations for my life which pushes me to be a better husband, father, neighbor and employee. I suppose that comes from a very demanding father and loving mother who always reminded me not to waste God's gifts to us. I volunteer my time as a youth basketball coach and have discovered tremendous satisfaction in helping kids improve themselves and working together as a team. I also push myself to be physically active as my desk job doesn't allow for much calorie burning.

Why I am a Mormon

When our family was living in Orlando, Florida, I attended an early morning seminary class that met before school started. In those classes I remember studying the Old Testament and Book of Mormon. My teacher challenged the class to read the scriptures and pray and ask Heavenly Father to help us know if what we were studying was true. She promised that if we would read the scriptures with the desire to truly understand what God wanted us to know, spent time thinking about what those things were as we had read them and then prayed to Him, that He would answer our prayers through the power of the Holy Ghost. I decided that I would try and apply some faith to what she taught and started reading the Book of Mormon for the first time as a freshman in high school. Once I had completed that book, I prayed to know if what I had read was true. As I prayed I had an experience I had not ever had before. I felt a very warm, peaceful and loving impression in my mind that it was true and inspired by Him. That experience has stayed with me and has been reinforced on numerous other occasions as I have continued to seek out His guidance and direction. Those experiences have helped me understand that God loves His children and that if we truly seek, we can find.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by participating in weekly Sunday worship services and serving in the church. Over the years I have enjoyed teaching youth and adults in Sunday School classes the gospel of Jesus Christ as found in the Bible and Book of Mormon. As my children have gotten older I have enjoyed watching them share in their primary classes spiritual thoughts from the scriptures and listening to them pray. Very few things are sweeter than listening to a child pray to their Heavenly Father. Children can be such great teachers. They are so sincere and keep things in a proper perspective. I believe living the gospel of Jesus Christ is a seven day commitment and not a Sunday only obligation. I volunteer my time a youth basketball coach, and serve on various boards in the community that support the needs of youth and students. I also serve in support of other religious organizations efforts to serve the community such as the Salvation Army and the Catholic Community of Idaho Falls. I love these opportunities to serve and try and involve my children as well so they can learn to give of themselves as Jesus did.
