Hi I'm Derek M. Espiritu

I'm Filipino, I was born in Texas and raised in Utah. I'm random and I love being a Mormon

About Me

I was born a Mormon. Both of my parents were converted in their teens, one in Texas and the other in the Philippines. I'm a full Filipino but as American as they come! I'm the second oldest of 6 kids and absolutely love my family. I love singing and running. Before my mission to Sacramento California, I went to BYU-Provo getting all of my generals done. I have a passion for reading. I told my mom once, when I was 6, that I wouldn't put a Book down until I could read it! It's only funny because I couldn't read at the time and was the worst reader in the entire school. Thanks to my Mom, that changed quickly and I've loved reading ever since. Honestly, I'm loud. I try not to be, but being 'quiet and reverent' has never been my forte. Because I love sports, my mouth isn't the best when my team is on the move. I love building relationships with others, everyone needs a wanted smile or hello :) there ya go.

Why I am a Mormon

Well firstly, I was born into this church. But, like everyone, I had my doubts and concerns. I always knew every single Sunday, my family was going to church. Sometimes I didn't want to go, but this church has always been important in my life. I realize now how much the gospel has blessed me and my family. Where I really struggled in was knowing the truth of the Book of Mormon. I had read, more like skimmed, through it and really didn't understand the context or the importance of it. All I did know was I needed to know it was true. My senior year of High School every single day in the morning I determined to read 10 pages a day. I finished in 3 months and prayed to know if the Book was true. My answer helped me understand that things need to be done in Heavenly Father's time (and he has a sense of humor), I needed to read it again! As I attended college in the fall, I again started the process of reading it. This time I slowed down, re-read, and applied everything that I read in it. I prayed to Heavenly Father to sincerely know it was true. My answer was simple, "you've known, you've always known." Why I received that answer was because I looked back on all the blessings that this book brought. It was indescribable joy that I felt! Now, I want to share that joy with all that truly want to be happy! I believe in this Church. More importantly, I know that Jesus Christ leads and directs the affairs of this church!

How I live my faith

Currently, I'm serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day saints in California Sacramento. Before this, at BYU-Provo, I was a gospel doctrine teacher for the Student Ward there. I try to help others know who I am and what I stand for. Being a friend is the easiest way to spread the truth. I try to live how Jesus would have me live. Being confident in the gospel and yourself is apart of what Jesus expects of you. Knowing that I'm a Son of God continually motivates me to improve myself. Jesus Christ has changed my life and I want to share that with everyone I meet! People need this!

Why is family so important to Mormons?

Derek M. Espiritu
Family is the most precious thing to our Heavenly Father. He knows that through our families we can achieve the purest of joy! As we grow closer to our families through Jesus Christ our joy will be shown. Through our Savior, our families can be closer than ever and find peace in a world full of turmoil. Show more Show less
