Throughout the summer ill be backpacking, camping, kayaking and swimming... pretty much anything active and outdoors. I desire to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and am currently working on the papers required. my family is so much fun with 5 kids and a dog we get very busy sometimes, but i love them all so much. My friends and i do crazy things together, turning the card game president into a very loud and exciting game to bonfires and quading. I love life.

Why I am a Mormon

i am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints because of an experience i had in my teens, and experiences that continue to happen. i was born and raised in this church , though that did not withhold me from questioning the teachings and practices of it. I loved the people and the atmosphere but did not really have a testimony of my own. So i decided to test it out. i read the Book of Mormon all the way through and then prayed as Mormon challenges to know if it was true. I felt nothing. This shocked me so much and i was so disheartened because i wanted it to be true and wanted to have an answer. Me being who i am i didn't just leave it there. I wanted to know and feeling nothing i knew was not an answer. I read the Book of Mormon again, and again. still i did not have that grand answer i was looking for. i continued to follow the teachings and commandments in hopes i would someday feel if it was true or not. Then i was faced with an extreme challenge in my life where i was abused spiritually emotionally and sexually. i felt it was my fault and i was so lost. I was rereading the Book of Mormon when i came across the scripture in 2 Nephi 1:15 that says " i have but behold the lord hath redeemed my soul form hell; i have beheld his glory and i am encircled about eternally in the arms of his love" at that moment i was filled with the spirit, a warmth and comfort ,peace and love overwhelmed me and i knew right then that the Book of Mormon was true that i am a daughter of god , and he loves me so much . i knew that this church was the true church of god. since then i have learnt to recognize the spirit in my life more and have recognized many conformations of all aspects of this gospel and i know that this church is true to the fullest extent. because of this i want to live my life that shows god that i know it is true and that i love it.

How I live my faith

I am a part of a YSA ward, or a young single adult ward. This ward ages from 18-30. I have two callings in this ward, as gospel principles teacher and as a ward missionary. These callings give me the opportunity to serve others by teaching them the simple truths of this wonderful gospel, and by helping the full time missionaries in their efforts to bring others unto Christ. I also get to participate in service activities such as cleaning the chapel or doing yard work as part of the YSA activities. I love my callings. I have had such amazing experiences and have gained a love for all those i have been blessed to serve. I also have another chance to serve through a program called Visiting teaching. This is an inspired program that utilizes the women in the ward and puts us to work serving each other. we are assigned a companion and a couple sisters that we are to serve. We often share a spiritual message and then serve in any way possible. Friendships are strengthened and made through this and so much more. We are often given the chance to use our talents to serve others and i luckily sometimes get to serve others through music. Whether its playing hymns, in meetings or in the hospital, i love this kind of service so much. I can see how it brings happiness to others and to me. But the way i live my faith is not just through the opportunities that come, it is through little tiny everyday acts. i believe that my religion is all about becoming like Christ and so that is what i strive to do everyday. Give a smile, share your happiness, serve, listen and be kind. Act as Christ would . that is how i live my faith along with doing all i can to learn from the scriptures.

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

melissa bachelder
Members of the church are not required to serve a mission. It is very encouraged though because it is a great experience. Through serving a mission, you are able to serve god and his children which can bring some of the sweetest experiences you may have in your life. Love and Christ like charity can be developed and a desire to serve always can be cultivated. As a missionary you will learn about the world, gods children, his plan and how to follow the spirit much more fully if you fully apply yourself to the work. Missionary work brings happiness to all those that serve and eternal joy to those who receive the service. For the men it is a priesthood responsibility which means that they have a duty to god to serve as a missionary. for women it is not as much as a duty but they encourage all women who want to serve with open arms.
