Hi I'm Shirley

I grew up and live in California. I've been married 42 years, have three daughters and eighteen grandchildren.

About Me

I am the mother of three wonderful daughters and eighteen fantastic grandchildren. I love spending time with my family. We gather together every Sunday after church and have a big family dinner here at our home. My nephew, his wife and son also join us. There are 29 of us total. The grandchildren love getting to see one another each week. Nineteen of us have our ham radio license (that includes nine of our grandchildren!). We have a ham radio net each week, taking turns being net control. We originally got our licenses for emergency preparedness, but have made it a fun family event each week to check in on the net. I also enjoy walking or jogging about 5 days a week. One family tradition we have is to get together on New Year's Day and have a family run and breakfast. Everyone runs, walks or rides their bike or scooter for 3 miles and then we have a big breakfast together.

Why I am a Mormon

When I was 15 years old I began working a few hours after school and on Saturdays at a local business. My mother also worked there part time. The owners were Mormons and they began talking to her about the gospel. She agreed to have the missionaries over to teach us. As I listened to the lessons at first I thougt it was incredible that God the Father and Jesus Christ spoke to a person named Joseph Smith! What a common name! But as I learned more, read the scriptures and prayed about the teachings, it sounded so familiar to me, as if I had heard it before. I had many questions and the Elders were able to answer each one with simplicity. It all fit together like a big puzzle and I knew that what they were teaching me was true. Although my mom and step dad never joined the church, I was baptized shortly after my 16th birthday. My husband, (who joined the church after we were married) and I have three children, all daughters, who have been married in the temple. We now have 18 grandchildren and all are active in the church. It is amazing how all our lives have been blessed because I was converted to the church as a young girl.

How I live my faith

I enjoy indexing. Indexing is a way for genealogical records to be made available free of charge to the public, right on your own personal computer. Also, my husband and I will be leaving soon to serve a mission in Zimbabwe, Africa for 18 months. We will be working in a mission office, my husband will be over finances, also helping to fix bicycles and setting up apartments for the missionaries. I will be the mission president's secretary. We are a little nervous about leaving our close knit family but excited about this wonderful opportunity to serve. We know it will be a life changing experience.
